Cacti in the boreal forest. These are native to this region, and can only be found growing on steep south facing hills with rocky soil.

Y’all are sooo much better photography than me. I have some good subject matter and a big zoom but after that it’s point and shoot and no skill. Very nice elkhunter, and others.

With modern cameras skill is much less of a factor. These days even cell phones can produce some remarkable shots in the hand of people who know next to nothing about photography. In fact I would suggest that a more sophisticated camera/lens outfit works against many novices. I consider myself to be an advanced novice. I understand enough about what the different settings do to use them, but I don't understand composition or how to best frame a shot. Most of my success comes not from my skill as a photographer but from my skill as an outdoorsman. I know how to find and get close to my subjects. Both are critical to getting good shots, for amateur and professional alike. The other key to my success is shooting the same subject as many times as I can. On most shoots I will take hundreds of photos to get one or two worth publishing. This shot for example was one of over two hundred I shot that day;

Don't get down on yourself sir. I've got literally thousands of blurry, out of frame photos. If I take a hundred and get ten keepers I've had a great day. Keep on pointing and clicking.

I do the same. Took over 1600 on a recent vacation. First cull has me down to about 250. I’ll keep maybe a third of those and only post/share half or less of that…

I don’t want to turn this thread into a “how to” thread but yalls comments prompted me to try and learn something. Maybe others can too. I took these dead deer pics today. I’ve gotten fairly good at showing the rack in a realistic way but I’m point and shoot pathetic at the image quality. The first pic is with my Nikon P1000. That cam has a super zoom of 125x which is perfect for my purpose of learning about our bucks from distance which helps us in scouting for management purposes. It’s NOT a pro type camera for primo images but I thought it was supposed to be way better than an iPhone. It was real overcast today so I turned the ISO up a couple notches but I don’t know enough to be certain that’s even the correct direction. I’m 99% full auto usually. The second pic is with an iPhone. The image is way better with the phone. WHY IS THAT??? Is it the user or the equipment? I don’t know how to critique a photo but it’s obvious the iPhone pic is much more realistic, richer, clearer colors. If you can’t tell just compare the sky, grass, or the colors on the arrow. No “doctoring” was done to either cause I wouldn’t know how.

I agree, we don't want to turn this into a how to thread. That being said it would be unfortunate to miss this opportunity to learn. But I'll be as brief as I can. Two reasons the Iphone preformed better this time. #1 they use different sensor tecknowledgy, which means the phone is better in low light. #2 the Nikon photo is overexposed while the Iphone photo is under exposed. Higher ISO reduces blurring due to movement, which is the most common cause of blurring. In low light I use 800 or higher. The smaller F number = the most light but smallest part of the image is tack sharp.

The smaller F number = the most light but smallest part of the image is tack sharp. Faster shutter speed is what actually reduces blurring on fast moving objects. Faster shutter reduces light, thereby creating the need to increase the ISO to compensate for the faster shutter in low light conditions. However, really high ISO can create grainy images. Then the last part of the triangle is the aperture, or 'F' stop, as stated above. The thing with the more advanced DSLRs, they were not made as an alternative to point and shoot cameras. The term 'spray and pray' applies to most of us

Elk…the axis you take pictures of are impressive, thanks for sharing! I have a p900…it’s good for in the blind but Ramsey and I suck at using it for glory pictures I was blessed to have the opportunity of shooting a pretty cool stag with full velvet. I have 3 pictures, the others were on the p900 and are overexposed to the point they are almost white
