Started our trapping season this weekend. Had 3 days of nice weather, cold nights ands very little snow left. Tracks everywhere for bobcats and coyotes, no catches. Yesterday late, cold front blew in with wind and snow. Spouse went out for last light look see yesterday and shot a nice female in the meadows. Saw 2 more lopers in the hills. This morning 2 nice song dogs in traps. None were frozen surprisingly when we tripped them. We will re set next week some time and then hit it hard after Christmas.

Nope, they were not. They did smile for pics before the coup de grace.
The pic with the 3 is misleading as the female is the one on the bottom the males, bigger dogs, are the top 2.
Not sure how the market will be, they may be $25 dogs so if anyone has interest in any Wyoming coyote hides let me know. We'll see what the fur buyer says first.

China and Russia are the primary buyers so between the Covid shutdowns in China and the Ukraine war, this is going to be a bad auction year.

China and Russia are the primary buyers so between the Covid shutdowns in China and the Ukraine war, this is going to be a bad auction year. Actually some furs cleared last auction so they look good for this year. Coyotes are in the tank because of the big trim buyers going fake fur but bobcats and beavers this year look ok, beavers more so for castor. FHA put out a decent outlook for their auction, but we'll see. We'll take $250 for bobcats.

FHA Auction is who we send to and who affects our prices, here is their prediction, our furs get better prices than down South and hence reflect the prediction of decent prices on some hides. I hope your market improves but ours is looking up this year on cats and beavers etc, coyotes will bring $25 or so I bet. Fur Harvesters Auction Inc 2023 Market Forecast Fur Harvesters Auction Inc. dates have been selected with two auctions to be held “LIVE” in March and May 2023. The March auction will take place in North Bay with a possibility of the May auction being held elsewhere. Details of this, if it is to transpire, will follow. Travel restrictions for all internationals arriving to Canada have been lifted and this has allowed a return of live traditional auctions to be held. Last month SAGA Furs of Finland were the 1st to hold a live auction since the pandemic and their results on most items were positive with very strong clearances on all ranch mink and certain types of foxes. Russia held a sable auction last month as well and surprisingly prices improved and clearances were strong. This is a positive indicator that North American sables will do well this coming year. We are anticipating good demand on our sables as Russia did well despite the issues they face due to sanctions, as well other concerns brought on by the Russia Ukraine conflict. There will be none of these issue facing buyers wishing to purchase sables at FHA. With the exception of coyotes we are expecting better prices on all other long haired goods desirable for trim. Fisher prices and clearances are likely to continue to move upwards as has been the case the past two seasons. There is no question that FHA consistently receives the highest prices for wolves and wolverines in the world. Our customer base on taxidermy articles is very large and customers always have to fight to get what they want. We had the largest offering of Black Wolves in our history on our June 2022 sale with clearance of 100% averaging $587.84 and a top of $1012.50. Western Timbers sold 100%, average $231 and a top of $468. Arctic Wolves 100% clearance, average $302 top of $731. Eastern Timbers sold at $146 and a top of $443. A total offering of close to 600 wolves and customers still needed more at sales conclusion. The same demand exists with wolverine; our June offering sold 100% at an average of $487 and top of $887.50. Black Bears and Grizzly Bears will be in strong demand also this season. Beaver is another item that we have always outperformed our competitors for decades. Results on both last year’s auctions had beaver prices advancing with healthy increases each sale and a June clearance of 100%. We have been getting calls for beaver since the June sale concluded. Lynx cat (Bobcat) is an item that is in good demand at levels that remain very worthwhile trapping. Commercial cats from all sections are all but cleared out and we continue to sell at a $1000.00 US basis on top XXL western “A” caliber cats. As we will be holding all auctions live this season we expect this to bring about an increase in price and clearance on WESTERN cats. Lynx will be saleable once again at levels consistent and likely better than 2022. Otter are expected to sell at better levels again and clearances were good last year. Wild mink is expected to remain unchanged and difficult to move. We are optimistic that the recent clearances of ranch mink at the two European auctions will help stimulate muskrat sales and we intend on sticking to our evaluations until this happens. In the case of raccoon we will continue to meet the market and sell, expecting some price increases on better sections for 2023. As the world’s last remaining “WILD FUR AUCTION” our mandate remains unchanged. To supply our trappers with the best service and fight for the best prices, while providing international buyers the most diversified and finest graded wild fur assortments on the planet. Good luck to everyone this season. Respectfully Mark Downey Chief Executive Officer

Hope the season is good for the people that trap. Unfortunately the prices for hides in this region are nothing except for spotted bobcat and beaver and otter Just me- I'll continue to try and help make a dent in these nuisance animals as much as I can even if there's no monetary return. Hopefully I'll have the benefit of more surviving game animals and game birds that would otherwise be killed by these varmints. They'll just be throwed in the buzzard buffet instead of being skinned and worked. Anybody that utilizes deer feeders should be actively trapping as well, especially with corn prices what they are now

I feel for you Southern trappers maximum. You all do great work on predators without getting any real monetary value from them unless you get a contract for a ranch. Even your nice bobcats don't get the value they should. We can't trap otter so that is a plus for you. Good luck on your predator management.

We're on a break from trapping until right after Christmas. Going to hit it hard for 2 months then. Looking like snow for the rest of the season, not real fun but tracks are easier to read. Need to get a few snares out too.

I miss being able to trap. My health has declined in recent years and I am not up to the task any longer.
We don't have a lot of Coyote so I never got good at trapping them, although I did catch a few every year that I trapped.
It's good to see that some folks are still getting it done.
Do for yourself as much as you can, eat what nature provides as much as you can. This is the key to sleeping well and living long.

Starting to pull some sets, snow is just too deep. We've had weeks of no sign and now finally some movement but drifting snow is kicking our butts. Caught a nice tom bobcat in a snare this weekend, a 1st for me. He weighed 25 lbs and has great spots. Hope he stretches almost 40" but will be close. Had to dig out the Ranger while checking 3 times and the truck once when driving out from the ranch. We are too old for that kind of work, lol !!

Forgot, when we pulled up to the gate along the highway these 2 were waiting just inside. I took it as a good omen and then found my snared bobcat. Pretty young ram.

My boots say good to -20 but my toes always get cold, the wind really is the killer. I think it was 16 Wednesday morning and then the wind picked up too.
All pulled for the big freeze coming, and snow. Roads are already closed due to blizzard conditions along I-80.

Good looking cats and much better pelts than we get here. Of course with the cold and snow they need it.

When I started trapping bobcats about 50 years ago, we used a grouse wing on a string to catch their attention. One day I was checking my traps in the lavas, and found my trap and the wing gone. There was a business card thumbtacked to the tree from the game warden, asking me to give him a call. He "explained" why I couldn't do that, and let me off with a warning!!! OOOPS!!!

We use heritage turkey wings or pigeons wings, or shiny sparkly things like tinsel. No game animal or game bird parts are legal.
Nice the warden just warned you , lol.

Cats are boarded and coyote is going on today. We held back a bobcat from last year so we'll have 3 bobcats and 4 coyotes to try and sell, maybe a badger too. The badger is skinned with front feet attached though so we'll see, it may just get tanned and sold. Coyotes are nice but not worth much so $15 each may take them.
RANERRONG I think your cats down there have much prettier spots on their backs but not the fur. Ours have really nice fur and belly spots. The female we caught has a bit of the back spots but not a big cat so we'll see if there is interest in her. She did stretch 39.5-40 inches.

Making progress on drying the bobcats and coyote. Another few days and I can get them cleaned up and brushed our for sale. Female is first 2 pics, male is the last 2 pics. 39.5 " on the female stretched and 44" on the male.

Bobcats are dry and ready for sale. Going to try and sell the cast male we saved from last year too. The male form this year is nice so hoping for $250+, should be hundreds more but oh well. I think we'd take $500 for the 3 and that may be optimistic with the cast bellies. We do have to get this years cats CITES tagged before we sell them.
