It’s crazy how different poses and times of the year can make a deer look different. It’s why history and lots of pics throughout the year are always the best bet of being certain
You are 100% correct!!
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Aging is for sure difficult. I have to admit we have had a few that we had similar history with that we missed the initial age estimate on after sending teeth off. Of course some say that isn’t accurate either. Hey redchevy, when you send the teeth off do they age them by tooth wear or another method? I can tell you that beyond a shadow of a doubt that tooth wear is not exact especially where deer live on 'good groceries'. lol

Found two identical poses from this buck from this year and last year. I know how old he is (he’s been blind in that left eye since he was an 1yr old) and I know which pic belongs to which year. Both are from mid September of their respective year. So: How old is he on the left and is that this year or last? How old on the right and is that this year or last? Bonus: Are we shooting him this year? This one was fairly easy from those two photos to guess which one was older. The buck on the left is not mature and the one on the right is mature. Follow the neck down from the bottom of the jaw till it meets the chest/brisket area. The one on the left stops just above that mark and the one on the right at it. So easy to see he is the older buck in those two photos. Angle of the photo and B&W make it difficult sometimes...this was not one of them.

Got to watch him the other night for about an hour. Lots of fun watching old guys. Got a great pic from the cam and you can tell what the recent rains and rut can do to make a buck put on weight. Here has the face and facial markings of a 5 yr old. Hock stain and running down his back leg is more of a 5 yr old than a 6 yr old.

STx, are you saying that a 5 yr old will have more staining run down his leg than a 6 yr old??? Trying to learn.

This is what I consider a 6 yr or older bucks staining to look like this time of the year. Rarely will 5 yr olds look like this unless they are the oldest bucks on the place. The buck I posted below was not the oldest buck on the place but he was what I called a 6 yr old.
