You are 100% correct!!

Hey redchevy, when you send the teeth off do they age them by tooth wear or another method?

I can tell you that beyond a shadow of a doubt that tooth wear is not exact especially where deer live on 'good groceries'. lol

So:

How old is he on the left and is that this year or last?
How old on the right and is that this year or last?
Bonus: Are we shooting him this year?

This one was fairly easy from those two photos to guess which one was older. The buck on the left is not mature and the one on the right is mature. Follow the neck down from the bottom of the jaw till it meets the chest/brisket area. The one on the left stops just above that mark and the one on the right at it. So easy to see he is the older buck in those two photos. Angle of the photo and B&W make it difficult sometimes...this was not one of them.

Here has the face and facial markings of a 5 yr old. Hock stain and running down his back leg is more of a 5 yr old than a 6 yr old.

STx, are you saying that a 5 yr old will have more staining run down his leg than a 6 yr old??? Trying to learn.

No the lack of staining to be a 6 yr old. This is what I consider a 6 yr or older bucks staining to look like this time of the year. Rarely will 5 yr olds look like this unless they are the oldest bucks on the place. The buck I posted below was not the oldest buck on the place but he was what I called a 6 yr old.
