165 gr, .308 has been my go to killing bullet for big deer and big heavy hogs for 7 years. Wasn't my choice for shot placement but that's all I had on this one. See impact on hanging body. Typical no exit, huge wound channel, DRT results with nothing but jello internals up in the chest cavity. This has been my experience with this ammo (Superformance) all the way out to 450 yards. The hog was 205 yards and was dead before he hit the ground with perfect shot placement in the neck, speaks to it's consistency and accuracy. All last weekends work. [Linked Image]

SSTs do work well. Did you recover the bullet? I'd be curious what weight retention it has out of a 308.

I did not. I was cold, very cold.

They are relatively frangible and shed weight as they go. That is what makes them such excellent killers.

Shot my Throckmorton 9pt with my 7MM-08, 139gr SST yesterday, low neck/front shoulder from 100 yards and 15' nosedive, devastating damage through the cavity of that deer. Been shooting that bullet for 10+ years and everything drops very close to where they are shot. Great reasonably priced bullet as well.

I use the 150s in .308 and for the money, there's no better bullet for me. If I could get them in every size and weight I reload, I would be a happy camper. Until then, I have some good alternates lined up. up

Son uses the 120 grain SST in his 7mm-08 in the custom light loading. 120 at 2650 fps

He has absolutely destroyed everything he has shot, behind the shoulder shots very little if any tracking required. He has shot 2-150 lbs pigs this year behind the shoulder and both dropped where they stood

We’ve had tremendous success with that loading, probably 10-15 animals killed and none went far.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

The cavity pic tells it all. One hole. For the life of me I don't see why some prefer an exit wound.

Great bullet and job!

I love the SST bullet for my .270 and have used it for many years. I will say though that the new 145 grain ELDX actually groups slightly better with my gun. Dropped a 250-300 pound boar last week in it's tracks. All Hornady ammo for me.

Yes, I know this. I recovered a 125 gr SST shot from a 300blk a few years back. Even at that slow velocity, it lost a lot of weight. Just curious how much more weight they lose when you jump up to .308 velocities.

Exit wounds = blood trail. The lack of an exit wound on a mostly behind the shoulder WT shot is criminally bad performance. I gave up on 150 gr. InterLock out of a 308 for this very reason. Give me a well expanded bonded or Partition bullet all day.

I don't need a blood trail.

Some folks look for different things. Me I’m not a fan of the splat school of thought that wants chainsaw massacre internal damage and no exit. I’m in the partition type performance camp. Moderate expansion and an exit, believe it or not they result in many drt kills plus leave a blood trail if needed.

I despise standard hornady interlock bullets sst included, they are the poorest performing hunting bullets I have ever used. Like the eldx a lot.

No animal I have shot with an SST in any caliber has ever regained their feet to run away. Partitions also drop them fast for the exact reason. Bonded bullets on the other hand will have you wearing out a set off boots looks for the critter you shot that has a hole in both sides of it giving you a great blood trail to follow on all but the largest or toughest animals. The largest animals I have ever killed were done with a 208gr .30 cal A-Max bullet and there was nothing left of the bullet but bits and pieces under the off side hide. Elk will go to their knees, try to regain their feet and then drop down and never get up again.

My experience and thoughts as well and will add the Nosler Ballistic Tip as another that I have seen perform poorly too often.

SST's work so well i very seldom use anything else. Couldn't care less about an exit wound.

I can’t recall a behind the shoulder shot with an SST or Interlock that didn’t make an exit wound.

In a .270 or 7mm-08 they all exited IIRC. Only time they didn’t is when they hit a beach bone like a shoulder or even a neck shot, but in both cases it didn’t matter, they drop.

This buck was shot in the near shoulder at 140 yds with a .308 150 gr. Hornady SST Superformance. He reared up on his hind legs when shot and traveled 25 yds before nose plowing. The entrance wound broke the shoulder and the exit wound was the size of a tennis ball. We found 3”x4 piece of lung on the ground where the buck was standing when shot. [Linked Image]

I was just talking to Judd about this bullet tonight and my love-hate for it.

In my 270 with the Superformance ammo the results are sub par, until after 200 yards and then the bullet starts doing its job.

However, the SST in my 6.5 Grendel has been excellent on pigs, deer, coyotes out to 150 yards. Never an exit wound, but mass destruction inside.

My wife has well over 40 pigs and probably 20 deer with the 95 gr 243 SST. I do not recall her ever loosing an animal.
