I have some family in the Conroe area and I've been contemplating trying my hand on some public Texas venison. Anybody have pointers from experience? I'm used to hunting swamps. How's the public opportunities in that area? Thank you for any tips!

greetings from Lafayette! I've applied for over 20 years and have been on a few lottery hunts, but the odds are stacked against you for sure.
I'm not sure they have any public walk in hunts for deer around there. Its not like it is here, where almost all WMAs have a few days of 'either sex' or 'bucks only' walk in hunting. Just too many people competing for the same public land in Texas.

Here is a link to get you started. Conroe is close to the Sam Houston National Forest. In additional to a valid Texas hunting license, you will need an Annual Public Hunting Permit. There is good access and some good deer that come out of Sam.

Small world. I work in LFT!
Good to know, I assumed it was like the WMA's here. I'll have to do some home work.
I'm tempted to put on my camo and sit next to paw-in-law's pool. J/K! His neighborhood is infested.

Thanks for the replies!!
