It finally dried up enough to spray the goods on one yard today and it was late, already have some small weeds popping up so I’ll have to spray it again in a few weeks to wipe those out. Hopefully it will be dry enough to scalp this weekend but who knows, calling for more rain the next 3 days which sucks. Having nice yards sure does take a lot of work

I switched to spraying last summer.
Did pre-emergent the first week in Feb.
Other than the standard water soluble fertilizer, what else should I be putting down on this first application now that I am starting to see green?
We all need to practice Whoa more.

I wouldn’t unless you have weeds currently growing or have a specific weed problem in the summer you need to contend with. Do you have summer issues with spotted spurge like me and the gate keeper?

I did my front today. In addition to the normal scalp I also burned a small area. I've never done it before, Derek. You've probably seen it on TLF. I've been kicking it around the last few years and just haven't done it yet. I'll probably do it to my backyard to test out. I need to set a year and be dedicated to do it. Burning will burn of your pre treatment, if you're out early with it like I am. People that I've talked to that have burned and didn't do Pre immediately after or thought the pre prior to burning would cover them all said their weed pressure was very high afterwards. Whole risk/reward deal.

Spurge was a PITA last year. I didn't do split apps of isoxaben last year and spurge got me because of it.

Just my 2 cents worth. I`ve always tried to address my broad leaf weeds and any other weed issues in the spring before I ever think about fertilizing. I sprayed 15 days ago and finally seeing results. Takes longer to see the effects of herbicides in early growing season with cool days and cold nights. Never been a fan of weed and feed fertilizers either, but they sell a buttload of it at Walmart and big box stores. I guess it`s better than nothing and some people just aren`t able to get out and spray for various reasons. First fertilizer application, like a 1-1-1 or 3-1-2 ratio if you have no idea what your soil needs are. My target date for first fertilizer application is 4-1/ weather permitting. Got my first soil sample last year and Derek helped me with a plan. Ol Thumper said that having a nice yard sure take a lot of work...........And he was correct. What he didn`t mention was that it also takes a lot of $$$$ when you add up how much you spend on fertilizers, various herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, soil amendments, preemergents, mowers, spreaders, sprayers, water bill and cost for someone to mow if you can't do it (I`ve never had anyone mow my lawn). My advice to you is..........Don`t add that up.

Yeah if my wife opened up my chemical cabinet and started adding up stuff I would be on the hook for a high end purse or some type of clothes shopping spree. On the bright side besides some granular I won't have to buy any lawn products for many years. For the most part anyway.

I'm still mostly a granular guy for my main NPK, but do add some soluble to my iron apps. Peters Professional 20-20-20 Putting a 25# bag on 20,000 sqft of lawn every other week. That would be 1/2# nitrogen/month per 1000. If my math is correct, that would be 3 - 4# over the course of the growing season.

Thats a great product, Lots of products on this point and tough to find a good product cheaper than Peters. Winfield/Heritage has one and $20 a bag cheaper +/-. Spraying bypasses your soil and I support that for the most part. Have you looked into sourcing a cheap 13-13-13 or the likes granular? To improve your soil uptake No biggie. I support spraying.

Ol Thumper, don't be afraid to scalp well beyond Spring - mild (some refer to this as "height-of-cut reset") to wild. I've gone full scalp well into Summer.
My botnet is bigger than yours.

I got one yard scalped but it’s going to need to be rolled which I hate to do to fix the mower boo boo’s. I was planning on plug aerating it this summer anyway so I guess it’s fine. I’m not attempting the other one until it’s completely dry though, that sucked. It’s time to get the garden prepped and the bee hives moved in this weekend so I’m off yard duty a couple weeks.
Does anyone know of a place that sells a good yard leveling mix or a place that will order it in the big totes in northern Dallas? I used a 40-40-20 mix in the past from the big totes but the company is no longer in business and I need a new supplier.

Does anyone know of a place that sells a good yard leveling mix or a place that will order it in the big totes in northern Dallas? Mason sand. No mix. Early in the season so it can recuperate (depending on how much is used), but not too early. The grass needs to be growing vigorously. I apply a heavy dose of Urea before leveling.
