Mr. Wilson,
That is a great looking deer.
I built a 300 Ham'r and absolutely love the gun. I used your 18 1;15 barrel, and all light weight parts the gun with optic is only 7.2 lbs. Here in becomes the problem, I built my wife a 6.5 Grendel to hunt hogs with. At the range last week she asked if she could shoot the Ham'r and afterwards she immediately claims to my gun. So now it looks as if I am going to have to build another Ham'r as soon as I can afford to do so. This gun is shooting under 1/2" moa with 130 Speer hot cor ammo, it is by far the most accurate and consistent AR I own and I am sure it will get better as more rounds are run through it. I have killed 2 pigs with it so far neither took a step. We are going hog hunting this Sunday and looks like I am being forced to shoot the 12.7 x 42 (Beowulf) as the wife refuses to give me back my gun.
I want to thank you for the time and effort you put into the development of the 300 Ham'r as I feel it is a superior hunting rifle in the AR platform. I know the 6.5 Grendel has potential to ring steel at 1100 yards, and is a decent performer on deer and pigs, as I own 2 of these, but I feel that the in the field advantage goes to the Ham'r.

Hey BW,
Any chance you can put some squeeze on Sierra to get some 125 SPT Prohunters on the shelf soon? Can't find those any where.

My wife Joyce shot this nice 9pt yesterday evening just before 5pm. 170yd shot with the Lehigh Defense 125gr Controlled Chaos. He was quartering away and she put the bullet in the front of the ribs, he ran 20yds with a nice blood trail that started where he was standing.

Very nice, opening weekend is going to be miserable here in Wisconsin. Tonight’s low is 17 with winds of 15 to 25 in the morning. Going to be brutal.

Has anyone tried the 110 gr Hdy spire point in this caliber? Yes, a very good bullet for deer and hogs. Also usually pretty accurate too. Load data is on the WC website

How temperature sensitive is CFE BLK? I did a ladder test yesterday and my best load looks like it's at the high end of the powder scale. It was a cool day here at 55 degrees while I did the test. My concern is that when I shoot in 90 degree plus temps, that I may be overcharged. But it's also possible for me to be hunting in temps around freezing, although less likely.
Here's my load data: 16" Wilson 1/13 twist barrel with a Nomad L suppressor with gas block closed off, cci 450 primer, fully fireformed LC brass, hornady 125 sst with tips removed- c.o.a.l. of 2.250, and of course CFE BLK.
Charges from 27.2 to 27.4 yielded a velocity spread from 2473 to 2492 fps and had identical impacts that were 3/4" groups on target. Even though they were fairly compressed loads, I didn't see any flattening of the primers. The next charge up the ladder was 27.6 grains which picked the velocity up around 2520fps still with no flattened primer but I definitely felt some resistance while seating the bullet in the case. This higher load also grouped in the same place on target as the two loads under it even though the velocity had jumped up. Even though I didn't see any pressure signs, I didn't go further because of the load being compressed so much. With that, I'm not sure at what point I would start to see flat primers but I'm not too keen on going up to find out. Would loading in the middle at 27.3 grains be a safe bet for all weather conditions or should I load at lower node and be happy with 1.5 moa accuracy?

I went back and looked at the pressure testing I had done with this bullet and I think you will be OK as long as you stay under 2480fps MV

Thanks for the quick reply. Is that 2480 fps at 55 degrees going to be okay in warmer temps? How much of a pressure/velocity shift should I expect to see? I can't seem to find any reliable data online about temperature sensitivity with this powder.

Is CFE BLK a dirty powder, after a few shots this weekend deer hunting the round I took out seemed very dirty compared to my other AR calibers.

Just saw the release of 8.6 blackout. It's basically a 6.5 Creedmor case shortened and necked up for a .338 bullet in an AR-10 platform (less mag capacity, heavier, more recoil). Promises supersonic 150-160gr bullet at approx. 2400 fps out of a 12" barrel. I just looked back at Bill's data for the 150 grain Speer bonded and he was getting 2153fps out of an 11.3" barrel. I'm still just so impressed with 300 HAM'R, especially my 8-inch, which weighs in at a whopping 6.3 lbs including a Rugged Micro Suppressor hiding under a full length rail, Aimpoint Micro and rail-mounted light.

It's not uncommon for the ejected round and the top 3 or 4 in the magazines to be dirty.

Bought a 1:13 16” just to shoot 150gr bullets for deer hunting, what is everyone’s preferred load? Based in Wisconsin and like the ballistics and the foot pounds that it can carry at long range. Bill what barrel contour is the protector series in the 300 hamr? Do you plan on making any with an 18” barrel?

Preferred loads are pretty unique things as there are a lot of variables. There are at least 4 different 150gr bullets commonly shot out of the 300 Ham'r and each has its own unique ballistic traits. If you go over to the WC website you can see the loading tables they have published. If you read this thread from beginning to end you will acquire an encyclopedic knowledge of the cartridge. I also suggest getting some of the factory ammo to test in your gun.

As Big Sam says, each barrel is different and will prefer one bullet or the other, but a good place to start is the 150gr SST which hopefully we will have back in stock soon. The standard Protectors have Recon profile barrels, but can be ordered direct from WC with any bbl profile/length for 2-3 week delivery

Well over the weekend I placed an order on a 11.3 HAMR barrel from Wilson. Gonna throw it on and hopefully use it here in December for Missouri pistol season. Also excited to now have another round to hand load. Those who do hand load for the HAMR, what is your go to?

Let’s talk O.A.L. What are the most reliable OAL for the Speer 125 TNT’s ? The other bullet I am using is the Hornady V Max in 110. I am having trouble with the brass on both getting chewed up and about half won’t chamber. I have been using 2.200 for OAL and am wondering if that is my problem. My next thing is to remove the barrel and really polish the load ramp and chamber.
some people like silver and gold I like brass and lead with a little powder in between

This is the biggest buck we've taken with the .300 Ham'r so far. My dad is 6'3" for reference. 130 grain Hot-Cor out of an 18" barrel went through the heart and lungs and the bullet was recovered under the skin on the opposite shoulder. He went about 20 yards before expiring, leaving a trail of blood and lung soup. I've said it before but I'll say it once again, how thankful I am to Bill Wilson for coming out with the .300 Ham'r. It's keeping my dad in the woods hunting. Because of it's low recoil he can shoot it accurately and with good bullet selection it has excellent terminal performance. My dad and I are going to be talking about the big buck we had to drag out of the bottom of the creek for years. Thank you Bill Wilson.
God bless.

Good looking deer. As long as a hunter does his job, the 300 HAM'R will do its. . As we wrap up week two of our three week rifle season it has been a good year for the HAM'R. Three of the four of us have taken four shots combined with three 8 pointers and one 6 pointer being the results. All with the 300 HAM'R. The one boy that didn't use a HAM'R missed his only shot at a deer. Yes, he is hearing it from the rest of us.
