I figure I ruin the collector value of most of my knives as I am a user/collector.

Respectfully, the knives that I post are not for sale at this time

Well rifle season starts next Saturday. Looking forward to spending time in deer camp and cooler weather. It's been so dry and hot that we've not had but one campfire in the 7 months or so.

great thread! I really like that Olt Buffalo Skinner. I just looked him up. Looks like his shop is in Grand Haven Michigan? I was stationed there about 20 years ago when I was in the Coast Guard. Was that knife a custom order?

Tim is an old Special Forces guy from the 'Nam era.

He has a number of blade patterns and to my knowledge makes knifes to order based on those patterns in a different steel each run.
He posts as "MichiganRoadKill on 24hr campfire, mostly in the knife/blade forum there.

I've also asked him to do several "one-off" knives.

IIRC I spoke with four different custom makers of my acquaintance and he was the only one that cared enough to try.
I am a fan of Buffalo horn.

I've quite a few knives from different makers. I'm a user/colletor and muddy boar's play heck on knife edges.

I'd say the edge retention on his blades are on par with the best.

thank you for the great reply! He does some really outstanding work. I'm going to reach out to him. The Muskrat re-pro is really cool. I've used the KOA one to skin out a few capes. Great knife, great design. I'm thinking I need a buffalo horn handled knife.

thanks again.

I personally prefer high carbon steel over stainless of any kind. I got a bunch of industrial hacksaw blades some years back. Hard to sharpen, takes work to hone, and has to be kept clean and dry to keep from rusting. But, it takes and holds an edge better than any stainless.

However, when my wife wanted new steak knives, the blades came from Jantz and I added craft wood handles with brass pins. I’m not good at serrating.

Same here….best beer I ever had was a stout while stationed in Germany in the mid 80’s….

So thick you almost had to chew through the head to get to the beer. I have no idea what brand it was but from a local/regional brewery from somewhere in the Würzburg area.

Good evening, Sir!

I do believe his Constitutional Conservatism and Theocentric world-views in regards to life and liberty were anathema to WalterHog. Consequently after 20+ years of posting he was told he was dangerous and outta there........

Geedub, I sure am impressed with the variety of beers you come up with. I am dismayed by the limited bottlings available in my neck o' the woods.
Pearville ... Pearville. Hmmm. Would that be near Austonio?

Nah', its a sleepy bedroom community south of a burg named after Genr'l Sam.

It seems craft beer is a big thingy these days and if you are anywhere near a thriving me-tropolis one can break the bank if he should care to inquisitively imbibe.

If you want to be impressed, check out Tasunkawitko's Facebook Page. That guy lives beer!

BTW, you should definitely make it to the Shilen Swap meet.

You will have a ball and maybe also have an opportunity to break the bank.

Butch Lambert and probably a few other AR guys will be in attendance.

I plan to have a table unless providentially hindered.

I'll bring some knives, rifles

(HInt!)

and ammo.

Best,

PS: Maybe a couple'a beers to boot!

Thanks Geedub. That Shilen swap meet is moving up my list of priorities.
As you might recall, I hail from Oregon, where the microbrew scene has been out of control for decades now. I had to fly home twice in October, once for a wedding and once for a funeral, and a few bottles o' this wonderful dark ale took some of the sting out of it -- this and sitting by a fire petting dogs.

Thank you sir!

Chances are you are not inquiring in regards to the Bill Moran, so......

The knife before that is one of Arno Bernard's creations.

He is a South African maker. I've known of him for 20 years.

I could not pass it up.

He calls it the "Marabu" . N690 steel and Kudu bone scales.

I've had an affinity for knives since I was a wee yonker. Beer, a few years later. I'm approaching 72 yrs.

Time and money tells many tales.....

Appreciate the sentiment.

Great posts, great knives and great beers GWB. I just picked up a custom boning knife and a filleting knife at a show in Edmonton. Had to leave them with my son for now as i was visiting and didn't have any checked baggage for the flight. He'll bring them home at Christmas. Should have taken some pics i suppose. The filleting knife is made by a fourth generation smith and the boning knife by a second generation smith. Boning knife is done in AEBL with carbon fiber and the filleting knife is CPM 154 with maple.

Man that is a dark looking deer. Chocolate bone on top - very nice.

Like many of you I spend a bit of time reading interesting threads on various forums from across our great land. There is a thread on the "Hide" where a Vietnam era photo was posted and the actual soldier in that photo just happened to be a member of the Hide and identified himself in the photo. There have now been several years worth of back and forth stories and photos shared on that thread. Has to be considered the coolest forum thread ever... but this one is an easy 2nd. And hands down the best "knife" thread of all time. Thanks for sharing Geedubya.

Gent's

I've had fun with this thread.

Perhaps someone could start a "used knives" thread and show how they use their knives/knives in use.

Anywho, Today I turned 72 yrs. In keeping with this thread.......

I'm a malt guy, enjoy flavor and high ABV beers that are not too expensive. Porters, Dopplebocks, Dunkels & Stouts.

Do not know if there is a Total Wine in Lubbock or there abouts. If so you might google Total Wine a do a search for Porter Beers.

They list quite a few,

Enjoy!

Well much as i try to be a beer guy i always end up with whiskey. Recently acquired Ed Storch filleting knife. Ed is about my age (not old in our own minds but actually pretty close to it - 60ish) and is a 4th generation smith living in the hinterlands of Alberta.

[Linked Image]

Feel like there are lot of good custom skinning and dressing knives on the market but have had a hard time finding a fishing knife. Think this one is going to fit the bill. Will let you know as i will be ice fishing most weekends from now until mid April

And belated happy birthday! I am not the knife collector you are but there is something almost holy about well crafted steel. I haven't taken perhaps as many pics as i should have but your remark about used knives brought back memories. I have one particular knife that i have batoned through many many a bear sternum. Had to re-profile it once as in my youger years i tended to abuse my blades more than they deserved. But that too was actually a good thing as learning how to do that and bringing a "broken" blade back to life was quite enjoyable.

Good stuff guy!

That knife seems it could do double duty as a "boner" as well as a filet knife.

Let's see,,,,,,,,,,,,

This guy has been terrorizing my pens/feeders for the last two seasons.

This is a South African Zebu Bull. It is not a Brahma. Two cows make up his harem. He is mean and feral. No brand. As such he is an exotic. Must have escaped from a game ranch.

[Linked Image]

Last pix until recently was the 15th of November, 2023.

He showed back up the middle of last month.

I decided I had had enough

So a plan was formed.

Here was a South African critter.

I've a S X S double rifle chambered for the 405 Winchester.

[Linked Image]

So I asked myself, WWTD (What would Teddy do?)

Quien Sabe,

[Linked Image]

I know what I did.

[Linked Image]

By now you may be wondering what this has to do with Beer or Knives.......

[Linked Image]

When I first started collecting knives I had to have a Puma White Hunter. IIRC I got this White Hunter some thity years ago. It is one of the good ones.

[Linked Image]

I recently have acquired two 'Marabu's" by South African maker Arno Bernard.

[Linked Image]

The one on the left has warthog tusk scales. The one on the right is Kudu bone.

[Linked Image]

I cut twelve +/-1 lb. steaks out of one backstrap for bacon wrapped filets. The other I cut into three portions for roasts or jerky.

At 72, I'll probably never make it to Africa, but I luv it when a plan comes together........

Especially with a Texas Twist!

ya!

Dang, Geedubya, well done! That big boy had some beef on him. There's someone else out there in our shared orbit with a double in .405. Trying to think. A couple of Real Ale Brewing Axis IPAs might dislodge the data ... cool
Long day today. Sweetwater to Fritzville to Comanche (Shiloh Cemetery) and then home. Grabbed a pork belly at HEB to try my hand at home made bacon.

Hard to beat home made bacon if done correctly.

Great story, nice knifes and awesome riffle. I believe as you alluded to the 405 was maybe Teddy's favorite safari caliber.

Thank you sir for the kind sentiment.

[Linked Image]

As a collector/user, I will not claim that the 405 Winchester is my favorite, but somehow, four different rifles chambered for that cartridge have followed me home in the last few years, three of which I took to the range recently in order to decide which rifle would be used to slay that beast.

Very fine rifles sir, think you made the perfect choice with the double. I was curious and checked the web. there seems to be a fair amount of 405 Winchester ammunition around still. Believe Starline also makes brass for it.

That Ruger does it for me. Beautiful.

Only lever i have is a JM marlin stamped 45-70 guide gun. Not in your league but nice none the less. Kicks like a horny mule though when firing Buffalo Bore rounds. Excellent for short range bear hunting.

What't the old Clint Eastwood quote......"A man's gotta know his limitations. "

IIRC I took the skull to a taxidermist friend on 4/7 and just got it back.

Those were consumed at the rate of one to two per night during that interim period,

Your CSMC double caught my eye so I googled it. I will have to add some great guns to the reasons I love your thread. The shotgun sabot double makes a lot of sense though it takes deep pockets to acquire one. Beautiful guns they make!

I really like looking at the knife pictures! I think the ebony handled one is my favorite, It reminds of ivory.

10/4. Appreciate the sentiment.

July was a crazy month what with the hurricane and then less than two weeks later in Galveston for "Brown Beach Week", a family tradition the third week of July since 1969. In fact I watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon on July 20th 1969.

Solid work is all I know!

Ya!

Luckily I invested in a natural gas whole house generator three years or so ago. Power was off in my neighborhood from early Monday morning when the storm hit until late Thursday afternoon. Generator did not miss a beat.......

I've managed to come out on top since Carla in '61.

[Linked Image]

BTW, I learned early on to stock up on essential hurricane supplies so as to be able to weather the storm.

Yup!

I am a fan of 5" or 6" x 50.

52 Ring Gauge is about my personal max.

Anywho, don't know if you are a Rudyard Kipling fan, but what the hey!

"You must choose between me and your cigar."
-- BREACH OF PROMISE CASE, CIRCA 1885.

[Linked Image]

Open the old cigar-box, get me a Cuba stout,
For things are running crossways, and Maggie and I are out.

We quarrelled about Havanas -- we fought o'er a good cheroot,
And I knew she is exacting, and she says I am a brute.

[Linked Image]

Open the old cigar-box -- let me consider a space;
In the soft blue veil of the vapour musing on Maggie's face.

Maggie is pretty to look at -- Maggie's a loving lass,
But the prettiest cheeks must wrinkle, the truest of loves must pass.

[Linked Image]

There's peace in a Larranaga, there's calm in a Henry Clay;
But the best cigar in an hour is finished and thrown away --

Thrown away for another as perfect and ripe and brown --
But I could not throw away Maggie for fear o' the talk o' the town!

[Linked Image]

Maggie, my wife at fifty -- grey and dour and old --
With never another Maggie to purchase for love or gold!

And the light of Days that have Been the dark of the Days that Are,
And Love's torch stinking and stale, like the butt of a dead cigar --

The butt of a dead cigar you are bound to keep in your pocket --
With never a new one to light tho' it's charred and black to the socket!

[Linked Image]

Open the old cigar-box -- let me consider a while.
Here is a mild Manila -- there is a wifely smile.

Which is the better portion -- bondage bought with a ring,
Or a harem of dusky beauties, fifty tied in a string?

Counsellors cunning and silent -- comforters true and tried,
And never a one of the fifty to sneer at a rival bride?

[Linked Image]

Thought in the early morning, solace in time of woes,
Peace in the hush of the twilight, balm ere my eyelids close,

This will the fifty give me, asking nought in return,
With only a Suttee's passion -- to do their duty and burn.

This will the fifty give me. When they are spent and dead,
Five times other fifties shall be my servants instead.

[Linked Image]

The furrows of far-off Java, the isles of the Spanish Main,
When they hear my harem is empty will send me my brides again.

I will take no heed to their raiment, nor food for their mouths withal,
So long as the gulls are nesting, so long as the showers fall.

I will scent 'em with best vanilla, with tea will I temper their hides,
And the Moor and the Mormon shall envy who read of the tale of my brides.

For Maggie has written a letter to give me my choice between
The wee little whimpering Love and the great god Nick o' Teen.

[Linked Image]

And I have been servant of Love for barely a twelvemonth clear,
But I have been Priest of Cabanas a matter of seven year;

And the gloom of my bachelor days is flecked with the cheery light
Of stums that I burned to Friendship and Pleasure and Work and Fight.

[Linked Image]

And I turn my eyes to the future that Maggie and I must prove,
But the only light on the marshes is the Will-o'-the-Wisp of Love.

Will it see me safe through my journey or leave me bogged in the mire?
Since a puff of tobacco can cloud it, shall I follow the fitful fire?

[Linked Image]

Open the old cigar-box -- let me consider anew --
Old friends, and who is Maggie that I should abandon you?

A million surplus Maggies are willing to bear the yoke;
And a woman is only a woman, but a good Cigar is a Smoke.

Light me another Cuba -- I hold to my first-sworn vows.
If Maggie will have no rival, I'll have no Maggie for Spouse!

Y,

and

Best,

GWB

Good to see new posts on this thread! I, too, was getting a little worried.
Some great beers here, including two from back home in Oregon, the Deschutes Black Butte Porter and the Rogue Mocha. Many years ago when the microbrew industry was young, I used to visit the original Rogue Brewery in a small building on the creek in Ashland, Oregon. Their brews were very good, and very consistent, and they made an incredible cheddar cheese soup that was sent by God for winter days in Oregon when the wind was up and there was ice on those Southern Oregon mountain sidewalks. I lived several years near Bend on the east side of the Cascades, where the Deschutes Brewery got its start. Love their Pinedrops IPA. Black Butte is a beautiful volcanic cone near Sisters, Oregon.
Here's a lame attempt to honor the style of your images, Geedub. I traded for that crude knife (yes, that is telephone wire and duct tape on the sheath) from the skinner who used it to deftly quarter a Hartmann's zebra I shot in Namibia back in 2007.

MIghty fine. I luv knowing the provenance of a knife or gun.

Anwho............

I do believe it was Yogi Berra to whom the following quote was attributed.....

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it!"

Well, my darling bride of soon to be 46 years and I don't travel out of state much but we recently flew/drove about 2,500 miles from Pearland, Tx. to Albany, Oregon, to come to a "fork in the road"

[Linked Image]

Upon her insistence, I left it there, and only took a pix.

I fell in love with Oregon. For someone who enjoys outdoor activities it would seem to be heaven. I texted a couple friends......I've been here less than 24 hours and I'm already turning into a tree-hugger. LOL

[Linked Image]

Since my wife is the designated driver and I am the designated drinker, I could not turn down the opportunity to visit Deschutes, buy some Swag, a few Brews and show off some pix of knives w/ different Deschutes libations.....

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Had to snap a couple pix while sampling the wares......

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Bill, you mention Sisters Oregon. Ate one of the best burgers I ever ate at a bar there at the Gallery Bar and grill in Sisters after we got back from the Deschutes Brewery.

and as you know.......

Geedubya, y'all are making me homesick. Just thrilled to know you have been to Oregon, and especially Bend and Sisters.
I occasionally attended the Episcopal Church in Sisters, not because I am Anglican but because the sanctuary was oriented so that the huge window behind the pulpit frames the Three Sisters. Can't fall asleep during a sermon when you have such magnificence to ponder.
In addition to very good beer, there is some decent grouse hunting, fly fishing, and trolling/jigging for kokanee salmon in that country.
If only the progressives in Portland hadn't ruined it politically ...
Grateful for the photos you posted.
Bill

I am from that part of the world, Klamath Falls. My cousin still works at Deschutes Brewery, my aunt and uncle still live there in Bend. Wife and I raised our family here in Texas and will live out our days here but I do miss the mountains, trout fishing in cold streams, and the cool, dry air...

For some reason that stout has a nutty taste to it.
