We are on a 5 day combo mule deer/elk hunt on 40k+ acres private land just west of Clayton NM. My hunting partner connected with this nice buck Day 1. Seen a lot of deer and put a stalk on a bachelor group this am but the biggest was a broken off 4x4 so I passed. This pm we spotted a herd of 50 elk with 7 bulls at 1600 yds in the open prairie land — three 6x6s prob 300+ We were able to close the distance to 150 yd by dropping down into a canyon.
