Well, we decided we are going to head up there this coming Friday morning. Just about all the guys still want to go. At least we will have a good dog on the ground. I’ll let y’all know how we do on Saturday night. I get told every year the birds are bad in Kansas. When I’ve gone hunting we haven’t hard a problem finding them. But they sure arnt the same numbers as there was 10 or so years back.

We normally hunt around Dodge City. I like around Pratt but my brother said those fields are to big. This year we are going west of Garden City. No cover around Dodge.

Went and hunted near Sublette on private land in October and had a blast. No shortage of birds.

Well, it’s awful dry up here. Not much cover at all. Anything with decent CRP is being cut and bailed. One field that was decent on cover, we pushed up 9 hens and zero roosters. Then we hit a field that had good cover with a cut corn field across the road, we were able to get up 4 roosters, knocked down 3, and picked up only 2. Going back to that field first thing in the morning then me and my brother are gonna head home. There is a total of 9 of us. I’m hoping I can make this last push. My right groin area is so sore, I didn’t know if I was going to make it back to the truck in the parking lot after we left the restaurant tonight lol!!

Hopefully you’ll pick up a few more birds in the morning.

Finally made up for yesterday. I killed 2 this morning and another guy killed one. Tried a new field and it was loaded with birds. But they were rolling out 100 yards ahead of us. Headed back home now. Supposed to start snowing up here tonight.

We left Monday morning early but ran into the snow right away took extra 2 hours to get out of there.

Glad you had a good hunt! Although probly not the smartest idea but we will be heading out to Pratt County Jan 15. Hopefully the weather cooperates.

He wants to go so we are talking about going back later in the year. Lots of birds left in that one field. If we do go, it won’t be the same bunch of guys that thinks they know how to hunt them lol. My brother said we could really sweep those fields like you’re supposed to and probably kill more. Only problem, it could be real cold or bitter cold lol!!

I have been in Kansas since yesterday hunting solo with my setter, shorthair and lab. Hunting private between great bend and dodge city. Killed 3 roosters yesterday, killed my limit today, but it took me 8 birds to do it. All over very nice dog work and points. Numbers seem better than they have the last 3 years. I have been pleasantly surpised.
Quail have Been decent too. 3 coveys yesterday and 5 today. I have 2 more days left.

Thanks for the report, are the pheasant numbers generally better in the western part of the state? We were starting to plan our trip in the north central area, but are open to try anywhere.

Hunted in the Goodland area on the opener. Fortunate to have a daughter who married into a farming family in the area. Hunted with his family and locals who always extend amazing hospitality!! Was probably the poorest success I have had in 20 years of hunting the area!!! Harvested 5 birds on Saturday out of 11 hunters. No birds at all on Sunday. Must say missed the birds but the fellowship and hospitality cannot be matched as they are wonderful and fun folks who bless this area of our country!!!!

We just finished hunting in Hugoton,KS (Stevens County). The Pheasent were non existent. A few coveys of quail but no Pheasent to be had. Saw a few flying across the road. The corners we hunted were extremely dry. Worst I’ve ever seen and been hunting here since 2010, but the company and drinks were good.

Hunted around Kinsley with an outfitter and did great. Lots of wild birds. This guy does it right. Sanctuary areas that don’t get hunted and areas around that held quite a few. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/12/full-822-373363-c9786d6b_dcdb_40ce_aaf8_cfccab5f9b57.jpeg)

We hunted the last few days around Lincoln. We were absolutely blanked, didn't see a thing. Didn't even see a lone bird flushing out of range. We hunted some really good looking areas, but they just weren't there. The dogs worked hard, I wish they could have been rewarded with a couple birds. I had a friend whose buddy found some farmers that let him hunt, he ended up with a couple of birds on his own.
