Im pretty sure thats the same deer and part of why hunters left that ranch. The ranch owner wanted to kill him himself. Not many 200" typical 12 points running around down here.

Yes awards got alittle nicer, last year i was alittle let down by the actual award i recieved after wanting to place top 3in the state for so long. But at the same time, i realized if im killing deer to win a prize, im doing it all wrong. But the awrds fir this should be nicer than what you get at any of the deer contest in south texas. They use to do custom mesquite plaques and i think those where the best looking awards.

I do know of 2 typical whietails that may possible have a chance to get me back there next season. But we'll see how it all goes.

The Tlk buck and the new #1 typical have one thing in common in that there beams go out enough that you can see all the tines when looking head on. I always love that.
The following pic is #3 from this year and his tines stack behind each other when looking head on. STx can correct me but the new #2 All time Typical is similar to this rack. The only pic I saw of him was from the side and I’m sure he shows better that way. He has a similar overall look except he has two more typ points and more kickers.
The deer below netted 184 typ even though he had a 8” drop and the new #2 netted 198 typ even with multiple kickers.
Amazing. Personally, I’m glad the new #1 overall is a clean typical.

No Sir not the same deer. The one on our lease scored 180. He was right at 200 the year we gave him a pass.

Well i guess im wrong, just assumed there was no way two bucks that size where in the same county. I dont know if i coild pull the trigger on a slick typical that dropped 20" from year to year, monster either way. That area has really put out some giant typicals recently, or atleast they are finally showing them via the tbga

Interesting you mentioned more are entering them in TBGA. I agree. I was on the Executive Committee with TWA when we voted to start the TBGA program(1990ish). Many thought that the big ranches with big deer would not enter them. They were right, at least at first. At some point, more and more have been entered. I’m sure more are being killed but I think a higher percentage are being entered. Some, maybe a lot, are still kept secret(don’t blame them) but it definitely appears more and more enter TBGA as well as contests. I absolutely love seeing all the deer in person at the show.

Maverick has been putting out top end bucks for many years. I have posted in the past the Boone and Crocket records in Texas for typical and non typical bucks - the county is easily at the top of the list for both over a number of years. It also ranks highly in comparison to all states.

The amazing thing is that it is a small county compared to many others in South Texas and the golden triangle like Webb County etc.

My theory is that the brush in that area is inclusive of most all of the various forbs that deer eat and it is in abundance.

I was lucky to take this B&C book deer around 12 years ago in Maverick
and enter him in the TBGA. His G2's were over 16 inches.
It was a great event and we enjoyed going. I need to plan to attend next year -

Maverick has been putting out giant deer since the Indians were killing the them with flint tips.

Combination of a perfect mix of genetics, nutrition and big ranches that let them get old.

I had an opportunity to lease a pasture of one of the best ranches in all the state but handed it off to a friend who was a better fit for it, he’s killed a 190+ and the number of 170’s seen is staggering. I saw a buck there two years ago that would crowd 200” and watched a 5 year old 180” deer for over an hour at the same stand.

It’s truly the land of giants

I never get tired of seeing that buck. Or any buck in that class. Especially with great typical frame.
By the way, I do not think you are correct when you say you were "lucky."

You are funny - Ok I was "fortunate" - "blessed" - whatever the word is but I know when I was a young kid and my Dad (who wrote a hunting and fishing column for many years for the Taylor Daily Press) took me hunting I dreamed about a 140 inch buck - I laid in bed at night and looked at every magazine, book, etc. of big deer. Seeing deer that are 200 inches and over is amazing to me -

Picture is me and my Dad when I was in college and came home to hunt - Mid 1970's -

I’m not much of a whitetail guy, I view them as targets of opportunity to fling an arrow, but there is something different about them when they have a lot of bone on top of their head. Seeing a 180”-200” buck really is remarkable.

I understand that - everyone has different preferences.

Growing up all we hunted were whitetail. Then as I became an adult I wanted to venture out so I have hunted a number of animals in the states and elsewhere. The one animal I would put up there with the whitetail is the elk. Very similar hunting - smart animals with excellent smell -
but end of the day if you made me pick it is still the whitetail that gets my blood flowing

Yup
Maverick is no doubt some of the greatest whitetail country there is.
I'm fortunate to get to go every year to a couple friends 6k acre pasture they lease. It is absolutely stupid at times in the stand. Best sit I had there was 2 years ago when there were 6 out at the same time all within 30 yards of one another and the smallest was low 160s.....biggest 180ish. The unreal part is only 1 of the 6 was old enough to kill. There was a mid 70s deer that was 5x5 with one small sticker that wasn't a minute over 3.5 years old. eek2

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^100% Correct^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Luck played no part in it and that deer is simply amazing to say the least.
Luck in killing a big deer may happen to some, tlk's wasn't killed by luck. He earned him.
