It pretty much killed or deminished a boat load of mid-range cartridges. I'd go out on a limb and bet that it is even responsible for a reduction in our All-American beloved 308.

I went to my LGS yesterday, the 6.5 CM's on the shelves (both new and used) probably outnumbered all the other center-fire rifles they had (not counting ARs). They have ten 12-gun racks and two of them were completely full of nothing but CM, along with many others scattered among the other racks.

I guarantee the 6.5 CM has hammered new sales of .243, .270, .308, and quite a few others the last 5+ years. It's a fixture now.

Yup

That and Remington's make believe marketing department. Renaming it to .260 Rem was their first mistake. They should have left it at 6.5-08 and it would have sold better. I still call both of mine 6.5-08 and you'd be surprised at how many people think I'm talking about some wildcat cartridge when I say that.

Remington did so much wrong, for so long. No wonder they went bankrupt.

But I agree, call it the 6.5-08, and it may have been as successful as the 7mm-08.

What about the 6mm-08? peep

Get a 6.5x55, going strong since 1893.

There is such an overlap in cartridge performance there is no need for a new cartridge to be invented, and we could eliminate half of the existing ones and be just fine.

In Europe they mainly stick to a handful of cartridge chamberings and they do just fine killing game.

By and large with most mid range cartridges there is only a 10 grain and 100-150 fps difference between them all anyway.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

txtrophy85 I agree with you, pretty much all the standard deer cartridges have a max pbr of 300 yards, give or take about 20-30 yards. And they are all deadly cartridges. The advantages might be marginal for most shooters. So to me, it comes down to what you can get and what you like.

I like to shoot the 30/30 lever gun but I paid an average of $30 per box, up to $37.99 plus tax, to stock up about 200 rounds of that during the shortage and am afraid to use any of it. If I get a chance I will use it on a deer but that’s it. Ammo shelves look good now but 30/30 is still scarce.

.30-06 was almost as bad but at least you can find some half the time now. I’ve got a couple hundred rounds of that and won’t use it either, except on a animal.

My next rifle will be 6.5 Creedmoor, or .308/7.62 NATO, or maybe the new 6.8mm military cartridge assuming the availability of ammo will rival the current NATO cartridges. That and a new .22LR repeater because I’ve got a little over 10k rounds of that, that I stocked up for 4H.

It only makes sense for hunters to want a new rifle and caliber after they've been sitting in the same chair watching the same feeder season after season. Others are constantly looking for something new in overall pursuit of the animal and outdoor experience. Little wonder these are often the same guys looking for somewhere new to take the same old beat up rifle and scope they've been using for decades. And then there are others who just enjoy the challenge of mixing gunpowder and lead to find the next wiz bang load.

I'll never forget the morning I walked up to the gun counter at Gene Taylor's Outfitters in Gunnison, Colorado a few years back. After briefly spanning the rifle rack and knowing the seemingly popularity of the caliber, and asked the young guy working the counter if they had anything chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. With little expression on his face he answered, "Yeah, we have a few of them." I thought later what he likely thought to himself was here's another one that thinks everything else on the shelf won't kill a deer or elk.

You were talking about it a few months back too. Buy it and plenty of brass and don't worry about it dying, primers, powder, & projectiles will be manufactured still. You prolly won't keep it that long anyway!
