It’s not going to yield what it normally does, but it’ll save me & my brother from buying overpriced bagged corn for the next 18 months.. Nothing is going to yield much this year in southwest. That doesn’t look to bad though, what variety did you plant?

3 different varieties this year and 2/3 still look decent and probably would’ve turned out REAL good if the faucet hadn’t turned off in May.. We might be shelling corn in July this year..
I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

We haven’t planted yet. It’s going to be Russia Roulette on irrigated with energy and fertilizer costs. Thought about just planting everything in cotton or milo to cut back on water

Fertilizer…… Ufffff… Our supplier told us the other day that if we didn’t have our liquid N order for top dressing wheat (typically done in February) to him by July 4th, he couldn’t guarantee delivery..
We should’ve done more cotton this year-

Don't buy at Kerrville Ranch and Pet Center. $12.00 a bag. Nice store, but I remembered why I hadn't been back in years. Definitely going to get interesting.

I may go to Corn Farmer hell for this.. if you don’t need it don’t buy it. Still on last years corn and futures are dropping BOBO, How about explaing the chart for some of us dummies! Daniel This is the quick version. Corn is bought and sold all year long even though its harvested only in fall. I grow corn, if I don’t like the price at harvest I may store it until the price climbs to a number I like. It’s above is a prediction of pricing, via futures market Contract price on futures. Meaning you purchase a contract to buy/sell commodities like Corn. Think of the above picture as cents per bushel. So for sept delivery, it would be $6.616 a bushel. Bushel weight is 56lbs for corn. Divide out by pound= $ .1181 a pound. So 5.90 per 50lbs. I/you could buy a contract today for a buy/delivery in sept, now corn may be lower or higher in sept, that’s just the price I locked in for sept delivery. Now this is a 5000 bushel future contract., meaning if I was buying or selling 5k bushels(. Doesn’t include storage or transportation, discounts, testing etc.) A micro contract at 1000 bushels might have a slight higher price but not much

BOBO, riddle me this.. Why do you think the price per bag isn’t following the market right now? We did ok & sold some corn contracts at $7.50, but like your math shows, the price for a 50# bag isn’t necessarily following the market price, which has actually dropped a bit in the past 60 days..
We might sell some bulk corn right out of the auger cart this year..
I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

We might sell some bulk corn right out of the auger cart this year.. I don’t know, normal years futures it’s a pretty good indicator. As you know Deer corn has always kind of been like gasoline at the retail level. It’s not really based of a set mark up or margin like most retail goods. Rises and falls with elevator price My only guess is current deer corn was bought last year, and they may not have any more big deliveries until sept. So mark upwhat they have in inventory to high % to maximize return until new corn is cut. I honestly can’t fathom some of the prices posted on here. With that said im sure some of it has transportation petro premiums attached to it but that still doesn’t explain some of these retail prices. At same stand point I don’t understand the futures market being as low as it is with Ukraine not planting and Southwest (including western kansas and Nebraska) in a drought. First time in a long time we haven’t pre-contracted any corn. I don’t think much of my corn including irrigated is going to make. We have had 3.75” since 1/1. I image we will end up baling it if drought holds. If you can get .20lb out of the auger at this point it’s worth the hassle. Weird times. Only good thing so far this year was what little wheat I had I got $11 for

Great insight..
I’ve talked to several folks that’ve dealt in row crop commodities for years and they all say that a Texas drought doesn’t even move the needle on corn prices nationwide since our production history is so relatively insignificant. Cattle? Significant.. Wheat? A little significant.. But we just don’t have the soil to produce 220/bu an acre corn.
Glad to hear you cashed in on wheat when it was good.. We only made about 28-32 bu/acre due to the dry fall/winter but, as you said, the scale price was very good.

Ya I have friends In Iowa and when I look at the average bushel production and limited irrigation usage I want to puke. I figured with TX, Ok, Eastern CO, Western Ks and Nebraska in drought I figured it would move the needle some especially with Ukraine but I guess not. Interesting times.
