I feel certain this has been discussed on this thread. However, I did a search and didn't find anything. We have not had cattle on our ranch and so we have not used pens around our feeders. We want to put some cattle in our pasture for the summer to graze down our grass. How big do you build your pens around your protein feeders? How tall do you make the fence? I will appreciate thoughtful responses. Thank you. Rich

Yes, bigger is better with cattle. You need to keep them as far away from the feeder as possible. 25 yrs ago we built our pens 96'x96' when cattle when on the ranch. We used 34" tall hog panels without and issue but if there are no hogs then I would go with 50" cattle panels. You can then cut 1 panel down every 3 panel to 40" + or - for access. 10 panels will work okay but 12-14 is much better. 16 panels is ideal if you have a lot of bucks and multiple feeders in each pen. Deer do not have good depth perception so keep the perimeter and interior clear or clean of brush for easy access. If the deer are not used to jumping fences you may have to raise one panel or leave it open to get them used to jumping in and out.

If you don't have hogs you can use a hog panel and elevate it so fawns can go under them. Some places will leave fawn windows for access. They are small openings cut in a few panels anout 8"x24" or 12"x24" on or close to ground. If you rotate cattle you leave pens open in pastures without cattle. When I didn't have hogs I used tpost and sucker rods to build square pens. 3 horizontal rods and 48'-50' square. Bottom rod at 18"-20" above ground and space rest 12" above it.

we use 12, 16ft hog panels over lapped 2 squares... circular..we put the panes together with stainless steel zip ties....100 for 18 dollars....This pen is plenty big for a feeder and protein feeder... 2 tposts where the gate is then 1 every 15 feet.... we buy precut 4ft rebar that go in between the t posts for additional support....best pens we have ever made....

Do you know what the diameter is with that design? Should be 57 feet. 16 foot panels with 2 squares overlapping turns into 15 foot panel coverage (each square is 6"). Circumference is 180 feet for 12 15' panels, and diameter works out to be 57' and change

You have to account for the overlap on both ends of the panel so you only have 14' length for each panel.

No, I accounted for it already. You don't account for overlap on both ends, just one end as each panel overlaps the preceeding panel

I don't think you have to overlap so much that you lose 2 feet in length. I use 9 panels minimum.

we tried to overlap 1 on the first pen and ended up needing 2 rebar per panel rather than 1...thats another 75 dollars...probably more now...that was 2 years ago....

What size rebar did you use in between the tpost. I am about to put up a 10 panel for a single protein feeder.
