I use a 22-250 with 1 well placed shot under the ear. Never fails stop them in their tracks! 55 gr vmax will scramble that brain!

With that kind of bullet placement, just about any caliber will work. I've successfully used everything from a 450 down to a 22 magnum. Placement, placement, placement are the 3 key elements in taking the piggies down with one shot.

Depends. I usually deer hunt with a 30-06, and I've shot hogs with that. Used my .357 rifle once, and I'm sure it died, but it did so on the other side of the fence. (My deer stand is close to the fence on the property where I hunt.) When I'm out just for hogs, I'll use my AR in .223, loading Sierra Game King 55 gr bullets. Even through the shoulder, that bullet works. I have one I recovered from the hide on the far side, having gone through both shoulders. Perfectly mushroomed, and the 170 pound hog took only one step.

My planned hog gun is a 375 H&H but I’ve been known to use anything from a 22 to a 50 BMG. It really boils down to what guns in my hand when I see one.

Outstanding strategy for taking stationary singles in good conditions and calm circumstances. I have trouble consistently making brain shots on runners, in high winds, or being severely out of breath after speedy and long stalks up and down hills. Otherwise, 6.5 Grendel with good expanding or explosively fragmentary ammo.

Whatever is available. This one was with a Ruger SR9. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/01/full-59616-332763-9mm_hog_11.02.20.jpeg)

So far my kills have been with my M96 Swedish Mauser with a Burris scout scope. Waiting on a rear sight scope mount for my new Yugo M98/48 and then I'll put that into action, the mount allows me to use a regular scope instead of a scout scope which will be nice. Haven't seen any hogs within range when I've had my Ruger MPR out.

The shot placement discussion makes me nuts. Only an idiot wouldn't understand that where the round impacts is important. But this is where the problem begins, isn't it? Over the past several years, I have guided hunts for several outfitters and a good many charities (military, church, etc.). Several hundred "hunters" over that period. Those numbers have included all kinds of folks from newbies to military. By and large, a huge percentage of folks can't place a round where it needs to be....many of them, not even close. I can't tell you how many times I have worked to get "hunters" within 40 yards and not a single hair touched on a single hog. That is frustrating. I remember a night with a large outfitter. He had 12 hunters out, together, at this point. Stupid, but I ain't runnin' the show. There was a good number of hogs across a fence, 50ish maybe. They are, give or take, around 50 yards out from the fence. Favorable wind. A gully in between us and the fence. I set back and watched. He managed to get this thundering herd down through the gulley and up to the fence without the hogs spooking. That's actually better than I thought it would go. They lined up along the fence, 12 of them. The firing commenced. Off the hogs go. 30 round mags emptying. Lead flying everywhere. Cease fire is called, guns on safe. Two hogs lay dead. This sort of shooting is way more the norm than most folks think. Shot placement can be discussed, but I am convinced it isn't on the radar for a high percentage of shooters. That comes from the experience of observing a large number of folks in the field over time.
On a positive note.... The best person I ever took out was a recently retired SEAL. This guy was amazing. It was for a university group that was raising money for a scholarship for their school at the university. His brother had won the auction for the hunt. I have taken a lot of military guys out and I hate to say, but I have generally been underwhelmed. This guy though... It wasn't just his shooting which was never miss. He definitely racked up body count. It was his ability to move through woods like no one else. Completely silent and fast! I will never forget that hunt.

Usually my deer rifle in .270, 257 Bob, or 25-06 but I nail them with my AR in the Federal Fusion 62 grain 223. Flat out rocks them.

For me anything over 125 yards is a long shot. Within that range my 300 Blackout works fine. I've gotten a few twofers on medium sized hogs, and had the 110 grain Hornady SP bullets fully penetrate 160 Lb hogs. I've recovered a couple that were just inside the skin on the far side from hogs that were slightly larger (but still under 200 Lbs).
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

I take my deer and elk rifle down, 300wsm, and my lever action 41 mag. We have some big fields on the family place, 300+ yd shots easily and then thick cover and draws for the lever action.

Whatever I have with me at the time...bow, rifle, pistol. I don't care just want them dead. I carry the .22 mag rifle in the Ranger 365 days per year and in the off season I use it on hogs. Smaller hogs in the lungs or shoulders if possible. On moving larger hogs it will be in the liver. That slows them down for a better shot in the neck or head. Lot of times the liver shot they will go down and allow me to get up on the quickly to finish them off. I also carry a .223 from time time to time in the offseason and will shoot the lung or shoulder shot 100% of the time when I can. I am in thick cover, so long shots are not that common. 150 yards or less with many under 100.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Most shoot very poorly offhand, so expecting inexperienced hunters to do it well is an exercise in futility. A rest of any kind helps a great deal as does verification of zero on arrival. A second benefit of zero verification is it gives the guide an opportunity to confirm the hunter isn’t afraid of his rifle. It’s easy to shoot poorly when excited, and experience in this regard goes a long way.

Whatever I have in my hand when I see one...
But when I am going on a pig hunt, I'll typically have a bolt gun in 6.5cm or .30-06.
Wife has always wanted some Hard 8

I regularly use a bolt action .223 with 62gr Federal Fusions. Most of my shots are under 150 yds. Last week I had a 2 for, the .223 passed thru a 100 lb. doe ear to ear and took out a 2nd larger sow just behind her ear.

Usually with a Savage A/R chambered in 6.8SPC. Hornady SST 120 gn. If I'm going to stalk thru the woods for them, I'll use my Remi 700 25-06.
