I know you have to have a plug in your pump gun if hunting migratory bird. I don't think you have to have a plug in your shotgun for quail, but I do anyway. If you use a pumpgun on quail do you keep the plug in?

You don't need a plug in for quail since they do not migrate except to the next county after shooting at them. Blast away. Of course, it adds weight to the gun but a 4th or 5th shell is nice when that lone quail pops up after the big covey busts.

Check out the 2004 Outoor Annual Means and Methods site. I only see the term "legal shotgun" when referring to migratory birds. "Legal Firearm" seems to be the term TPWD uses when referring to Quail. Definitions here.
Free reign to take the plugs out...

If you go to Kansas you better have that plug in, cause if you don't, you'll receive a 'not-so-suttle' $500 reminder from one of KDWP's finest to put it in next time.

No plugs required in Texas.

Just use o/u or sxs. No plug, no littering the pasture with empty hulls.

How many times are you going to hunt the same covey ?? The guys I hunt with, the idea is NOT to kill as many birds as possible, we hunt the same coveys for 3 months.

You don't have to have a plug for quail in Texas. Years ago we were hunting quail and I decided to take the plug out of my 1100. I pried the magazine cap off and the spring went INTO ORBIT. We never saw it again. I had a single-shot that trip.
