Why is that? No glory, cost of processing, lease rules or what? A couple of places I use to hunt were covered up with them and I always took a couple each year for sausage and backstrap but only a few of the other guys took any at all.

Most likely because of the glory. These days hunters are so focused on the big trophy bucks. Not hunting to eat but for pictures on instagram to brag about. Most deer leases have too many doe's and need them to be thinned to really get the bucks moving more.

I shoot two every year. Still manage to get my "big" buck too. Most people will only shoot one deer a year. That deer is going to be buck 9 times out of 10.

From what I know there are a lot of does getting killed and a million times more than there was back in the day. Every situation is different.

I was talking with a friend who has an MLD lease last week, He said he would buy the bullets if I came down and helped shoot a lot of does. His regular members never want to shoot does.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I had TPWD biologist come out to my place after I bought it and within a about 90 days he determined that my doe to buck ration was about 5:1 and said I need to shoot every doe I can. Told me it was likely due to previous owners , who had owned the property for 50+ years only shooting bucks. I have some nice bucks that are around constantly but will be focusing on getting the does in check for the foreseeable future. There doesn't appear to be much pressure around me as its been pretty quiet this season. I would say that 99% of the shots I have heard since I moved in back in May are from the several HF ranches around me.

Call me an outlier, I shot a doe opening day. She had one fawn, was the only deer out and it was late. Perfect opportunity. We always try to shoot more does than bucks though.

Because most people don't eat more than 1 deer a year, they want a buck, and even though there are tons of places that take deer for processing for free they won't shoot them because when you pull the trigger the work starts. Between my bother in law, father in law and myself we usually shoot and quarter about 15 does a year on our place and take them to friends and family. We have 34 doe tags this year and 4 other lease members so hopefully between them shooting 1 or 2 and bringing a friend/family member they can take care of the rest.

Most folks aren't telling stories about the meat they put in the freezer but I'd agree with freerange that there's a lot more getting shot than you may think. If folks are truly managing a property then killing does is usually part of the process in addition to holding off on less mature bucks. I've heard various theories around good buck to doe ratios, but my personal philosophy is that I probably should only shoot one buck a season on my lease even if there are other opportunities and lease rules allow. Everything after that is going to be a doe if the animal populations allow. And like you said, the eatin is just as good!
tough times don't last, tough people do

I went for years without killing a doe on my lease, had more bucks every year on camera than does.
Places around there were 110 to 300 acres and most had more hunters than needed and would take their does and have grandkids out to get their deer as well and usually does. 15o acre place with 5 plus 5 or more taking 15 or more doe can sure drop the #s in a smaller area as well as killing young bucks aplenty. Antler restrictions sure helped at that place, an average 2.5 year old buck was usually about 12-13 inches so most were let go to reach at least 3.5 years.
Now there are fewer on that place and we are seeing more does than in years post, guess now about 2 doe per buck which is good for hunting.
Lots of people want buck only but others want meat. Most on here post pics of good bucks but the does are rarely reported here unless kids get them. I do know a couple MLD properties that went to TYHP hunts to get doe numbers reduced to fill out lots of their MLD requirements and I think that is a good way to do it.

I shot a doe on opening day about 10 minutes after sunup. I'll shoot one doe or more each year.

I shot five the week of Thanksgiving and have two more doe tags. Next year I'm upgrading and will have the biologist come out. I'm hoping for 12-14 tags next year. I'm on 600 acres and surrounded by an immediate 1200-1500 where only about 8-10 does are taken total, if that many.

I have no issues shooting does. If I don’t eat them I donate them or give them away. I normally shoot 5-6/year at least. Record is 6 in 1 day.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

This year was first year I shot a doe in 5 years. Needed to put something in freezer. She was big, had a button buck with her. It was time for him to grow up.

Depends on the ratio, where I hunt it’s always about 5 bucks for every doe so we rarely shoot them

Last year I shot three and no bucks and this year I have shot two and no buck so far. No machismo here, I am a meat hunter and proud to kill does and pigs. I do want one trophy buck on my wall at some point but I have not had the privilege to kill THE one yet. The does are delicious and 90% of the red meat we eat is venison. I like 3-4 deer a year in the freezer, I process my own and like to share meat with anyone, mostly family or church family, who needs a little during the year. I am taking a group of young men from church to a ranch in South Texas in January hoping to kill at least 20 does to share with everyone. If you aren't keen on eating that much deer meat or need to reduce does, shoot them and grind them with beef fat 80/20 into hamburger, it is very easy to give away to folks in need.

My landowner doesn't want us shooting does. We have some really big ones too! Oh well.

I’ve shot a deer or more, 5 out of the last 6 years, out of 8 deer, only 2 bucks and one was a spike. I do believe killing the big buck has taken over the world of deer hunting for the most part, however there are still many people who hunt for the enjoyment and the meat!

Where I live, you can’t use rifle doe tags on the conservation land. Only on private. So I have to use my buck tag on a doe. Anticipating a bow for Christmas . Then I can shoot does and I will. In the meantime I am saving my buck tag, but I might go ahead and use it on a doe so I can have a little venison on the side this Christmas!

You answered your question with your cull thread. If culling was about better deer, then why neglect the largest % of habitat/food usage of a population segment ? We cant solely manage antlers by just antlers....

I will shoot eight this year. Will consume at least six. May shoot more if others don't shoot what they are supposed to. Likely to happen. It's to a chore I love.
