You can forget about finding a good tamale nowadays unless you're really good friends with a Hispanic family that's keeping the holiday tradition alive. Define Hispanic? I would say someone from Mexico. I get a couple dozens each year from a Mexican Family, bad thing is they are not very good. But the mother who makes them is rather skinny, and this isn't normal.

When I first moved to where I am I would pass by an old truck at a nearby intersection selling tamales. After a couple weeks I finally stopped and picked up a dozen, $12 I think. Now I just pass by.

If you want it done right, you've gotta do it yourself.
We make our own, anywhere from 60-100 dozen a year. It's a labor of love. I make a full meal out of a dozen, or a half dozen and a couple fried eggs. My wife makes about 10 doz. For us and there amazing. Yep lots of work but worth it.

Well it's that time of year again to buy & enjoy tamales during the holiday season. For us, tamales are hors d'oeuvres not usually the main entree. We'll buy a few dozens to take to friends houses, break out at home as a snack or give some away as a gift. So when did the prices hit $15 a dozen? I've bought some for as low as $8/dz & some as high as $15/dz. We've bought homemade & store made. We usually get the threat of "order now if you want any". I've been very disappointed in some of those expensive ones. I don't expect a tamale to be a burrito, but I do like to get my money's worth. As a kid growing up in SA, I remember buying a dozen for $3 & they weren't loaded with meat, but they were greasy & delicious - the perfect messy finger food!
Okay semi-rant over.... Man the tamales from 20 years ago around SA were WAY better than any of the BS they have now. Only thing I have had that comes even close to the ones we bought for $3/dozen as a kid are the ones this gringo made himself. That said, after making some I wouldn't do it to sell them for $50 a dozen. Ive seen some little old ladies that can spread masa on a corn husk with the flick of a wrist perfect every time.... it is an art! The problem nowadays is that a lot of places are using tamale machines instead of making them by hand like they used to. There is a tamale business here that used to make and sell the best tamales anywhere for $5-$6/dozen. BIG tamales, thin masa, full of meat. Their business grew and then they bought a tamale machine, all down hill from there. Masa waaaaay too thick, thin and inconsistent meat for $12-$14/dozen. Apparently, regardless of how you adjust the machine it's just not the same as making them by hand. Skinner, that is exactly what I have seen, i didnt know its because they were using a machine. I bought a good tamale with thin masa in years.

I have lined up at 5:00 AM to buy tamales in San Antonio. They were absolutely worth the time and money.
My mom would feed us tamales out of a can when we were kids. I spent a lot of years thinking tamales were disgusting. Then I had a girl from Guatemala start working for me. She brought homemade spicy pork tamales for lunch one day and gave me a couple. Oh my goodness!! I have been a tamale junky since.

There are 1000s of variations of tamales. They will vary by region within a state, and they vary by the country the tamale maker is from. Not all tamales are great, but still a good tamale. If you have access to Filipino store, ask if they have "bobotu", theyuse rice dough instead of masa and banana leaves instead of corn husks. A local friend uses canna leaves,, he says there is a lack of banana leaves around here.

You get something completely different for tamale in like Colombia. Still good though.

Tamales are the wife and I's early morning food in the blind. I wrap 4-5 in foil and reheat over the Buddy heater. Nothing better. Get ours from Marquez Bakery in Arlington.

If you can't hold a tamale by the end with the shuck and it doesn't slide out it is no good.

Anyone remember the little tamale trailer in Quinlan back in the 80s? They were made and sold by a white family and were the best I've ever had. Not dry like any other tamale I've ever had. And I have had a bunch. I still love a good mexican Tamale but these were just different
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Our grandfather, a WWI vet, would share a can of Hormel Tamales with me. Must have 8 years or so. Room temp right of the can. Been 60 years, but best tamales I ever had.
If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

Hormel canned aren’t epic but aren’t bad, either. I’ve had them before and likely will again.
There are two competing families in Goldthwaite that sell every Saturday morning at the courthouse. The one I’ve bought from is pretty decent. I plan to try the other next week. $12/doz at either.

Been there, went on hunting and fishing trips with my grandpa and uncles, all they took to eat was cans of Wolf Brand Chili and Gebhardt's Tamales with boxes of saltine crackers. After I came back from Vietnam we went fishing on the Concho and I had packed pots and skillets. They could not believe I want to actually heat that stuff up. They were amazed by the GI heat tabs, probably would have crapped if I had used C4.

I have a coconut friend that I get tamales from. I give him plenty of deer meat for all of his tamales, and he returns the favor with plenty of the finished product. I no longer trust the little old lady selling them by the dozen from door to door. That’s a foregone value, as far as I can tell.
