So I've been waterfowl hunting for 3-4 seasons now and I absolutely live and breathe every second of it. My buddy and I that I hunt with 99% of the time were tossing around the idea of getting into deer hunting as well and possibly hopping on a lease for the 2022-2023 season. I was just wondering if there is any public land (APH permit) around Texas that we may be able to take a weekend at and at least have a chance at something? We can duck hunt anywhere, I'm just not too sure on where we could have a chance at killing a deer. We live in Houston so take that into consideration I'm completely new to hunting deer so I'm not even sure where to start and that's why I'm here asking. As far as a rifle goes, will a 5.56/.223 take care of the job effectively? Or do I need to get an actual deer rifle like a .270/30.06/7mm, etc...? Thanks on any help to point a newbie in the right direction

"hopping on a lease for the 2022-2023 season" isn't all that easy unless you know people or are willing to pay quite a bit. As for a gun, a .223 can get it done, but that's certainly on the light side.

Start with a paid hunt, maybe go on a paid hog hunt before deer season.

Since you are admitting to being a novice I'll give you a little advice you didnt ask for. Instead of asking where can you "kill" a deer, the better wording may be to ask where you can "hunt" a deer. Im not at all being a smarty, but just helping you to understand and fit in within an admitted new environment.

Go where there are a lot of deer. Not East Texas.
