Intentionally ruining meat so you don’t have to track your trophy is a waste IMO. Every animal deserves the same respect whether it’s a doe for meat or a 200” trophy.

On thinner skinned game like deer I aim right in the square center of the shoulder. This shot either drops them or causes them not to go 20. I know lots of people worry about losing meat but getting an animal down ethically is way more important to me than losing some meat. Just because he instantly falls doesn’t mean he dies any quicker. I have witnessed a handful of deer that needed a follow up shot 30 mins later to finish off after they were “anchored”. Double lung them and they are dead in seconds. They may cover a lot of ground in seconds, but it is just as quick or quicker than an anchor shot.

I have been shooting the high shoulder, point of the shoulder or quartering to shoulder crease shot the last 29 yrs now. I do not like tracking deer. This...high shoulder shot, shoulder/spine/shoulder, DRT.

I hate digging out bone and bullet fragments out of those sweet shoulder roasts…… I respect the animal by ensuring it does not suffer. Shooting it through both shoulders and the spine does that. I would rather destroy some meat that to lose the animal and not have any meat at all. The thick terrain I hunt (East Texas) is a pain to track an animal in. No Thank You. Just my .02, LeonCarr

Neck shooter here...humane and they are DRT. I rarely miss, not because I am a great shot but because most of my shots are less than 100 yards. For the last several years I've been shooting Barnes TTSX bullets that don't disintegrate and ruin meat, so I tend to aim a little lower on the neck (instead of just below the head) in case the deer moves right when I shoot.

Here, you take out spinal cord, and major artery. Every deer I have shot with this placement was dead before it hit the ground. The shock to the circulatory system kills them, the spinal cord hit anchors them.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

According to a friend who had a deer processing place for years the most common shot placement was the intestines followed by multiple to the rump .

I hate digging out bone and bullet fragments out of those sweet shoulder roasts…… Is this a serious post? You disrespect the animal by killing it instantly with CNS shot vs letting it drown in its own blood? Now I've heard everything.

Meat deer- Brain pan, neck, or double lung behind the shoulder. Trophy buck- high shoulder is my first choice.
