If your only choice was to have a rifle/handgun combination in the same caliber, what caliber combo would you go with? Think best combo for hunting and self defense.

If you want to share the particular guns that you would shoot them out of, that would be great, too.

Since you said hunting, I think I'd have to go 44 magnum like Jason.

I'd go Ruger Redhawk Revolver and a Ruger 44 Autoloader Carbine.

Do they still make 44 autoloader carbines?

I sold one about a year ago, they can be had…pricey

It’s one of those mysteries of why don’t they give us .44 mag, .357 or 10 mm semi PCC’s

There’s a market but yet still nothing, I’ve emailed Ruger over it

Ruger gave us a 9mm and .40, which was cool but I’d pay too much for the others if they’d offer it

Imagine a youth hunter w a 10 mm PCC

For the life of me I can’t figure out why Ruger isn’t jumping on that

If you’re bored, e-mail them so I’m not the only maniac

They haven't made them in years. Used to be able to get them used for about $600 5 years ago. Now the thy are ridiculous.

Yeah, that's too bad. It would be cool to have one in the safe.

I've got a 45 LC combo and a 22 mag combo but I'd like to have a 357 combo also. I had one but I put the rifle up for auction when one of our members house burnt down and never replaced it. Be cool if they'd make a lever gun in 327 Federal mag, already have half that combo.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

If i was limited to a handgun/rifle combo it would be .357. It would be hard to narrow down exactly which of each i would choose. I have a rossi m92 in 357 and a Ruger 77/357. The Rossi is handier and has a larger magazine, but the Ruger is more accurate and accepts a suppressor. I have multiple ruger wheel guns in both SA and DA, and a Coonan. The Blackhawk is the most accurate, but the Coonan has 7+1 with a quick magazine reload for 7 more. Hard to say which 2 guns I would choose, but the caliber would definitely be 357. And I wouldn't mess with factory loads. I can safely reload to higher velocity and better accuracy than most factory loads.

.357 is too limited for hunting although I do have an 1892 and Blackhawk combo. An 1894 is too heavy and is a weaker design than the 1892 ... plus way inflated in price.

You won't see a PCC in .44 or .357 due to feed issues. Ruger used to make a Deerstalker in .44 with a rotary magazine (think 10/22 on steroids) but they have more than doubled in value and were not always reliable.

Now 10mm makes a whole lot of sense...so does 45 AUTO. Seems that if KelTec can make a 9mm and .40SW they could make a 10mm.

I have a modern S2K/P95 combo in 9X19 but that's REALLY NOT a hunting round.

I would have to see an 1892 lose an accuracy test to a Ruger 77 equipped with open sights. If the Rossi is recent (made since mid-'90's) it has bad sights.

I have the 22WMR combo with a Marlin 783/scope and a three-screw Single Six Magnum but the size of game is very limited and I myself will not be learning to reload rimfire.

In the end my choice would be .45 Colt. I can load it to .44 Magnum velocity for use in an 1892 or loaded down some for handgun accuracy and safety. I have the wheel gun portion of that combo but still looking for a private sale on a .45 Colt 1892 (blued 20").

Pass the gravy.

I have a Henry in 327 Fed Mag, very fun and tame gun to shoot. Big boy steel carbine with large loop and 16.5" barrel.

Probably a 308 in an AR-10, and an encore pistol. To be honest if I was limited to a standard pistol cartridge used in a rifle to make the combo feasible, I would rather forgo having a pistol, and just have a rifle in a real caliber. I've tried this several times over the years, generally with 44s and 357's, and every time I've decided it was pointless because the rifle gave up too much even to something is mundane is a 308, or hell even a 30-30, to be considered anything other than a special fun piece. And if just having fun is the goal, the caliber really begins to matter less and less

So my advice is by the rifle you want in the caliber you want, and then buy the pistol you want in the caliber you want. At one time I thought commonality of ammo was a great idea, but since getting ammo at all has become an issue, I have found it's better to have firearms available in a wide variety of common calibers

This, but I’d go Freedom Arms in .454 and a 90A rifle.

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

It has hunting limitations but I'm partial to my current combo in 10mm auto. I have a Banshee MK10 that is stupid fun that takes the same mags that my G20 takes
