It’s been along time since I have been on here. I’m hoping I can pick somebody’s brain. I moved to Arkansas am now currently residing in northern Arkansas. Last spring during a turkey hunt in the forest saw some woodcocks so I know I’m in a flyway. Our season opens in a few weeks my dad has a upland bird void in his life so we are wanting to give it a go. Any kind of info would be great pointers for hunting them without a dog and what kinda habitat am I looking for. Thanks in advance.

I lived in the Fort Smith area for 46 years, and quail hunted extensively. We would occasionally run across woodcocks in our hunts. My buddy’s quail dogs would point woodcocks just as readily as our target birds. We would typically find the woodcocks in the lower lying wooded areas that were a bit marshy. They seem to like a more heavily brushed area than quail. It was common to miss shots at them because our swing was limited by the brush. If you could get on the right away, you had a pretty good chance of a solid hit. They would come straight up until clear of the brush before leveling off for a getaway.

^ they are worm eaters so creek bottoms or low lying areas is where you will find them.
