thanks! we like it ... couldn't afford to replace with similar the way the market has exploded in this area
as you can see in the front yard, that was the topic I raised late last year into early this year ... the lawn service put something out in mid July last year and by mid August, my entire front yard (St. Augustine) turned brown and died off. Of course they tried to tell us we over or underwatered it, sent several of their people out to look at it, then stated it might have been a fungus ... but they were responsible for treating fungus, grubs, brown patch, etc. etc. plus fertilizer ... We bit the bullet early this year and installed a sprinkler system and the lawn service finally got up to the owner that came and looked at it, told his foreman to order new sod. They brought out 2 pallets and installed it back in June and it is looking good (without any lawn services).

Nice. I for sure would get a soil test done next Feb'March where your St Aug area is. Then you can really dial in your fertilizer needs for that area and the St Aug will run big time with proper NPK. And with St Aug stay on top of your fungicide prevention and it will do well.

That’s baller status. But since you mention thinking about spraying next year lets run the numbers on granular vs spraying Dimension/Dithiopyr. Example I’ll use is 7000sq feet since Hi-Yield comes in a 35lb bag and at 5lbs per 1000 app rate will cover 7000sq feet. Hi-Yield Dimension granular at Ace Hardware is $40.00 for a 35lb bag. I would apply Hi-Yield Dimension/Dithiopyr at 5lbs per 1000 every 4 months. 1 bag will cover 7000sq feet. So I would need 3 bags for the year. Total cost $120.00 per year. Which equals a cost of $5.71 per 1000sq feet per application. On the spray I’m going to go with Dimension 2EW from Do My Own. $146.00 for a 64oz jug. Application rate of 0.65 fluid oz per 1000 every 4 months. So I would need 4.55 fluid ounces per 7000sq feet. 13.65oz for the year. Total cost $31.12 per year. Which equals a cost of $1.48 per 1000sq feet per application. So you’re roughly saving $4.00 per 1000 per application. So saving that $4.00 per 1000 allows your to add other pre emergents like Simazine and Gallery/Isoxaben and spend about the same money as you would just using granular Dimension. Simazine is cheap and great against Poa Annua and Gallery is great against Broadleaf weeds. Gallery comes in a granular but it’s expensive.

[quote=Old Rabbit]Got mine in ahead of the rain coming in tomorrow. This was the second hopper full, thinking about switching to spray next year.

That is what I was wanting to hear and see Derek. I put out 7 bags and didn't get near the area covered I wanted to. I will be using a 60 gallon tank sprayer, the same one I spray my MSM to kill the Bahia grass. I will start working up the load rate now so I will be ready for spring. Thanks again Derek.

To even save more money. You could go with Prodiamine 65WG. Cost on that would run you .40 cents per 1000 per application.
This is my combo and cost per 1000 and year. It's early and I need more coffee but I think my math is correct.
Prodiamine 0.40 x 2 for 2 apps per year 0.80 Simazine 0.17 x 2 for 2 apps per year 0.34 Isoxaben(Gallery) $4.12 x 3 apps per year $12.36
So even using expensive Isoxaben I am cheaper spraying 3 different products than I am using a singular granular. At least compared to Dimension anyway. You can do granular Prodiamine for about $1.70 per 1000.
Not sure about ETX, but NTX we typically get an outbreak of Rescue grass in the winter. Simazine it a good post emergent for it.

So I did a thing. Labor Day weekend I got done mowing and things are looking great. Got a few beers in me and said F it scalp it and see how fast it rebounds. I did this a few months earlier with a 14 day goal. I did the same this time with the same goal. But the night time temps dropped shortly after and slowed it down. Plus I didn't push it that hard. I received no less than 10 calls and 10 text saying WTF did you do to you lawn. It's Bermuda so I'm up for anything following good cultural practices. This one area always scalps harder as it's a bit of a hump in the lawn. Can't easily see it but it's there. So I "scalped" it. I didn't take it down to dirt like a true scalp. On 7/4. Applied 1/2lb of NPK same day via granular. Tonight sprayed .10 of Ammonium Sulfate and a Micronutrient.

It is about 370 feet long x 30 feet wide and is about 95% Centipede. You can see some brown patches on the right side, those are seed heads that I will mow blowing them out into the rest of the yard. Our neighbor had their place hydro mulched and it rained really hard and washed a lot of it into the ditch is how this area got started. The other ditch in front of the house to the north is 625 feet by 30 feet and is about 50/50 Centipede/Native Bermuda with a few weeds still in it. And this is not counting the area around the house that we try and keep weed free. So you can see the cost savings will be large. Thanks again.

Thanks, we have been working on it for 25 years. Now if I can just get the neighbors on 2 sides of me to work on their Bahai grass it would really help. The one behind me, I even offered to spray their side yard next to me for free. The neighbor across the county road came and asked me why we only mow every 2 to 3 weeks (except for close to the house) and I told him what I used. He asked if he could borrow my 3-point sprayer next spring and has already ordered his MSM. Him, I will help big time.

MSM is great on Bahia. If you're able to spray it in spring while the temps are still in the 80's add methylated seed oil as your surfactant and it will really help the MSM go to work. Thankfully we don't have much of a Bahia issue here. It doesn't like our high Ph soils and loves y'alls lower ones. But we do have King Ranch Blue Stem. Which is a fall weed and up now. I have one neighbor that I help and he's religious on it and has pretty much no weeds. My other doesn't care and is covered in Dallis and now has KRBS up. And the bad thing about KR is pretty much nothing kills it besides gly. It's a beast of a weed in lawns. It grows faster and taller than Dallis. It sucks.

Day 17 after scalp. Almost back to normal. A little thin in a couple spots but it's thickening daily.

If you're reading this and getting into lawncare or experienced and looking for your last N app. Now it a great time to load up on Nitrogen and get some down. A lot of Walmarts are putting Scotts Green Max on clearance for $6ish a bag. It's a 27-0-2. Use Brick Seek to find which ones and load up. Great price and get it down now and between Oct 15ish.
Don't worry about the "green up" part. Most of the iron is not available in your high Ph soil anyway. It's a good N source for cheap and a easily spread prill size.

Those that don't have irrigation tomorrow and maybe Friday looks like a great time to get your last application of fert out for the year. Go with anything high Nitrogen. Scotts, Vigoro, doesn't matter. You want something like a 32-0-10, or 29-0-4, whatever the box store has. Follow the app rates on the bag if you get a name brand. They are good on their app rates. You find a private label at like the farm store we can calculate those rates. Sometimes the private label rates have you applying too much IMO. LFG!

I put out 25lbs of rye grass seed yesterday evening, and it came a toad strangler last night. Most of the grass seed probably ended up in the Edwards Aquifer.

10/22/2020 . . . 10/6/2021 Can’t say Applications are as regular as they should be but between the fert, pre-emergent, disease-X, a little sulfur and iron applications, it’s a totally different yard in 1 year. To heck with anyone who’s gonna make fun of my patch of grass. It’s the best looking one on the block.
