Wives van needed a oil change and I’m getting to fat to crawl up under that thing. So I stopped by harbor freight and bought a oil extractor. Hook it to shop air and bam it sucks all the oil out the dipstick. Filter is top mounted and in less than ten mins oil was changed and no mess what so ever. With all the Thousands and thousands I’ve spent on tools and all the oil changes I’ve done not sure why I haven’t done this sooner. The one from harbor freight is pretty cheap so we will see how long it lasts. If if craps out I’ll buy a good one. Oil extractor

Thanks for that tip. I hate crawling underneath. Something about it gives me a headache. But I like changing my own oil. Looks like a simple solution.

I was suprised how well it worked. And the best part no mess. I think the harbor freight one will be fine for home use that doesn’t get used a whole lot but I woild look for a nicer one if it’s used a lot. Was more a proof of concept for me. And I think it’ll be here to stay in my shop. Gonna use it on a fourhweeler this week and then I need to do my truck too.

Your dipstick does not go all the way to the bottom of your pan. What about the dirty oil that is left there?

Your dipstick does not go all the way to the bottom of your pan. What about the dirty oil that is left there? Yup Walter getting fat, that's a good one!  I know good and well you have a creeper. And if the car is too close to the grihnd, drive it up on ramps.

Yeah, I'd still want to pull the plug and drain the last bit out. But siphoning out most of it sounds less messy than dealing with an open pan of oil.
One shot is all it should take.

if there is any oil left in the pan after I finished it was very minimal, not even enough to be worried about. Jason you are right I do have a creeper, plenty of jacks, and ramps, but not dealing with any of that is much better  and I have put on a little too much weight

Also all the crap part of used oil in laying in the bottom of the pan.

Oil capacity of her car is 5 qts. which will get you to the bottom of the fill line, so true capacity is 6 qts which get to the top of the fill line and what I always put in the car. I used the tool and it had six qts in the storage and then took six qts to fill it back up. So i have no worries about it one bit. I won't loose any sleep over it. I know what bad oil and lack of mait, will do to a motor, I also know what taking care of one will do. I maintain a fleet of about 5 million in equipment that I own and pay for so I am pretty religious about service.

Nothing odd. We own an equipment rental company. I have two full time mechanics that work for me and I also like to get my hands dirty and work on stuff. We do all our own repairs that are not covered by warranty in house. And I also work and build my own stuff instead of paying people to do it.

Wburke, very cool. With you... enjoy turning my own wrenches. Keeps us humble sharp and in tune with our vehicles.
I prefer crawling under my car to change the oil. That way I can evaluate this suspension in the brakes and look for leaks and all of that. I's a great time to observe. Plus... want to drain the entire pan.

I believe from looking at the product page that it uses a probe inserted through the dipstick tube that reaches the bottom of the pan and pulls the oil through that, vs. pulling it through the dipstick tube itself.

I guess that would work on my tractor and Kubota RTV. The RTV is real low to the ground. And maybe the ATVs. I need to look into that thingamabob.

Put one the F133N Long Nipple on my wife's 2011 Toyota 4Runner, it saves a mess as the plug is recessed. Just slide a section of hose on it, put the hose over the drain pan and open the valve. Since the oil filter is on the bottom of the motor and you have to disassemble the skid plates to get to the filter, I might as well just keep crawling under it.

I used to do all my oil changes and lube but now ? i'll gladly let a shop do it.

A shop does my truck and car. I do everything else - ATVs, tractor, Kubota RTV.
