What would it be? Current job situation went from really good money to not so good with this new pay structure they put us on. Has me thinking career change completely. Been basically in sales for the last 18 years and ready for a good steady flow of income again. With the new structure I’m looking to loose about 30k this year roughly and the work to pay sure isn’t working now.
Could go back to college and do something that way too but trades seem to be the way to go now. I know lots of people who flip houses, realtors, land lords so I’d probably have a steady work flow just from them alone. Just not sure what the best way to go these days. Even thought welding but the money there would require me to be gone a lot.

HVAC or Electrician. You can got to school for either one or apprentice for either one. Either way you’re not going to make much money for a couple of years. I would call these careers for people to start in their 20s because of the longer payout and physical demands at entry level.
I was welding aluminum and stainless for 6 years before I went to the Mill. I’d say that’s a fallback, but it’s been 23 years since I ran a welder regularly.
There’s a couple of test to pass, but if you can pass them I will put you to work making money now, working you physically and mentally on a swing shift, and pay you good with good benefits. You will be home everyday, at some point.

Man in all honesty I would go drive a truck.......its an easy 100k first year job and anymore I don't see how anybody makes it on less than 100k.
And you can probably be done with training in just a few weeks.
And I hear that if you get referrals for some of the trucking companies they will pay you up to 5k if they hire them

I’m 38 now. Decent shape but could definitely be better. Spend 15 years doing tires so hard work I’m not afraid of but physically that also took a huge toll on my back and knees.

Ahhhhh, the the smell of a truck tire shop in the morning! I used to stack em all dang day, when I was 19. I don’t miss unloading casings from the front of a box trailer in Summer time.

If you go the trade route, do something that can be applied in many situations. CNC machinist would be my first one, as long as they start me out on a manual lathe to get the basics down. That’s really what I can imagine doing all day long. Machining anything and everything, from firearm applications to engines, to industrial precision parts. Toss in some of all welding applications available too.

I hear you can make good money doing home inspections, and you can set your own hours.

Wish they would have had CNC in the school I went to, they got them about 1 year later. The job paid well and there was a lot of satisfaction in turning a piece of metal or plastic into something that got the plant back up and running.

I started over in a new career 17 years ago going from insurance to HVAC and I really wish I would have started in HVAC sooner. It’s a great field however you are going to work in real hot and cold weather and the hours can be loooong as well. There are different areas inside the field as well, there are guys that do sheet metal ducting, installs, service and other area. It will take at least five years to have an idea of what is going on some people quicker, tools cost money good tools more, and I don’t think they like to make many for less than $500 or more.
With the government being involved in this industry to make it greener and more efficient there are a lot of changes in the last couple of years and everything is getting more technological and costly.
I would look into CNC if you want a trade then into radiology there is a large need for radiologist and the money is good as well and it’s indoors.

You could go to Mortician school (all it takes is an Associate's Degree) and then open up your own funeral home. With the current situation you could make a killing.....

Big negative on the truck driving, money is good but you'll have no life. Its not worth it in my opinion.

Electrician, welder, mechanic or HVAC. Everything I’ve read suggest that every trade has a shortage of workers and that’s why the pay scale and cost to have work done is skyrocketing. Many youngsters today want to be Insta famous and have no designs on getting their hands dirty.

Not true, you can find a lot of jobs that you never leave your city/county and are home at a reasonable time. They won't pay 100k but they'll still pay quite well. I would not be an OTR, though. I have a buddy making about 80k doing milk deliveries from Lubbock to Stephenville. Take the full one, drop it, hook up the empty, come home. Easy-peasy.

I make OTR money and im home every night, but I hate the long hrs. I'm glad my kids are grown. I would hate to be a truck driver and have a newborn, a young family, or a wife........ divorce is high among truckers. I steer anyone away from truck driving who ask, unless they are single, and no kids.

I’m an electrician by trade. It’s a decent trade in a large market but you’ll work a lot of OT. Was all good till I had family, if I were to do it again I’d probably pick plumbing. In the large market those boys make more than electricians. Also self employed service/ repair plumbers make a really good living. When you need a plumber it’s now! Most of the time when a breaker trips people run an extension cord and call their seconds cousins boy that does electrical work and he fixes it on his time for half price.

This was my question as any trade whether it be electrical, plumbing, HVAC, welder, etc is a good career but not easy on the body at all. Especially until you become proficient and move up the ladder at a company. I know that even down in the SA area a lot of the guys in those trades that run work (good sized jobs) make 6 figures now with damn good benefits.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

To be honest I would have to limit my practice to females only if I went into the mortician craft...
