Hey everyone I have a question I’ve been into deer and exotics my whole life and of course every September just like most I participate in Dove! This year I’m thinking about going on a Duck hunt and extend my hunting season after deer is over. The property I am going to be hunting on will have everything from teal , wood duck and green head I was told I figured I would stock up on a little bit of ammunition however that’s the problem I’m facing what do you guys recommend Shell wise? What shot is used for duck especially what I’m going to be around “ hopefully “
I tried to search for this information before asking however I had no luck so I figured I would make a post.
Thanks for any help given

One hunt. Buy a box of #3 steel. Plenty of folks have different favorites. I shoot the cheap stuff. Rio royal blue or Winchester expert. There is a fellow from Waskom that usually tells all the newbies they need bismuth. You don’t.

What the Smokey said. Anything from #3-#5 will work. Keep in mind that steel patterns a little tighter than lead.

Do you use Mod or IM choke? IMO 3" #3 is a good shell for any duck. I'm not sure how much of a difference it actually makes, but with that size I feel like I can knock down a big duck at 40+ yards and still not blow up a teal at 15 yards. Anything larger and you will end up with ducks with holes in the meat you can stick a finger through. If you're shooting inside 30-35 yards IC works fine. Early season and pond hunting I stick with it. I have an aftermarket choke that's a little tighter than MOD (not quite IM) that I use late season on big water. You can overchoke steel like 68A mentioned.

Ive used IC, LM and mod. I find LM works best for me. It’s in between IC and mod. In your case, I wouldn’t go out and spend extra money if it’s just going to be an occasional hunt over private tanks. Stick with IC.

I've always had good results with steel #4s. But a few years ago I knew we were going to be in some tight flooded timber with fast, tight pass shooting so I went to steel #6s and had real good luck.

I like a 3 inch #4 pellet, usually it is Remington from Walmart, through an IC choke
