I mowed in circles this morning. Keeps it from looking like a baseball diamond.

Thank you sir. Too soon to start fertilizing for weeds? Next year late spring I want to try and level it out, it’s rough as hell.

I'd be fertilizing small amounts often. If I remember correctly you're using Triple 17? If so I'd be applying 1.5lbs per 1000 every two weeks. That's .250lbs of NPK every two weeks. If you want to go every 4 weeks and apply 3lbs per 1k that's fine too. Mow as low as you can as often as you can and trigger that bermuda to run. How much square footage do you have? Looks sizeable enough that I'd be using a towable boom sprayer to apply most products.

About 10,000 sqft in the backyard that I want to maintain, another 12,000 or so in the front yard. I have a large push spreader and throw granular

Nice! You'll have that place poppin in no time. If you're on a strict pre emergent program I for sure would keep an eye on Northern Tool and pickup a Northstar sprayer when they put them on sale. Just what you would save in spraying pre emergent vs granular would pay for the sprayer.

Didn’t know it was that much cheaper to run a liquid fertilizer. Which one do you recommend?

Don’t know if it would work in my yard either. I have a very soggy yard, I still have spots you can’t step on or else you’ll sink a foot and we haven’t had rain in over a week. My first mowing isn’t normally until mid May due to the yard retaining so much moisture. Hell, my ditch out front still has 3 inches of running water from ground seepage.

Yeah you're going to have soft spots with all this rain. Let it play out for a bit and see how it turns out. You're good for a while. Push NPK/Growth and worry about Pre's come mid August. My pre emergents are Prodiamine, Isoxaben and Simazine, all sprayed and watered in. Prodiamine is my favorite. I'll do the math tomorrow when I have time, but squirting it vs granular Barricade it significant cost savings, especially on your sq footage. Isox isn't cheap either way but squirting it vs granular Gallery is significant too. Simazine is liquid only and a great Poa fighter. Its cheap so a no brainer. You will save a S ton spraying those. No issues with a granular NPK program and sup sprays. You don't have to be one of the other. I do granular and spray for my needs. Works well.

Here is the math on Prodiamine granular vs spray. Using max rate per year. Using 20K sq feet as the example.

Barricade is probably the best or one of the best Prodiamine granulars on the market. Max rate is 6lbs per 1000 for the year. You would need 120lbs of Barricade for the year. 2ea 50lb bags and 2ea 10lb bags. Total cost $230.00 for 20k for the year.

Prodiamine 65WG. Max rate is 0.83oz per 1000sq feet for the year. You will need 16.6oz for the year. So basically 1lb of 65WG for the year. It comes in a 5lb jug at a cost of $65.00. You're only going to use one pound of that for the year. So you have a 5yr supply. Cost per year. $13.00

Derek,

What to use on clover and dollar weed. have used the weed-stop type weed killer with water. Seems to stunt them for a while then it grows. Saw an ad For Bonus S fertilizer that was supposed to kill the items. What say you?
Thanks!

I'm not a weed and feed guy. I'm assuming you have St Aug since you mentioned the Bonus S? The active ingredient in that, that kills the weeds is Atrazine. Is your situation where you can spot spray these weeds or are you needing a full broadcast area.

I dug up a few Dallas grass clumps with a garden hoe. I don't think I could do that now.

Sorry. But I'm going to ask you a lot of questions. Knowing your location I already know your in a high soil Ph. It's hotter than hell already and you have St Aug so your options are very limited. I already know what my rec is for the most part but need to know.

As a DIY'er do you rate yourself as a 1-10, 1 being the lowest as overall lawn care and being able to measure out products and applying .
Pics of weed. I don't topically see clover this time of year? Oxallis?
Hight of cut
Do you use pre-emergent
What's your fertilizer program
Do you have trees, kind?
Square footage
Fungicide/Insecticide program?
Irrigation?

Derek, Will try to answer your questions.
Would rate myself at 10
May be oxallis..looks like clover and another that is small and round in shape.
Cut 3 to 4 inches high Yes emergent Balan
Fertilize once in spring and late summer. Nitrogen and weed killer
Ash and Red Oak
10000 sq. ft. ( the clover/dollar weed/oxallis is primary on the outer edge)
NO Fungicide ? insecticide program
Sprinkler system, usually about 3 to 4 inches of water as needed.

Thanks Derek, appreciate your time!

I was hoping you weren't going to say oak. My go to in this heat is Celsius WG and MSM. But MSM in high Ph soil and you run the risk of killing your trees. Celsius is labeled for everything you listed. Downside it's $120 a bottle but will last a long time. PM me your address and I'll send you a little to try out before you buy some.

Balan is good, but it's a grassy pre emergent. Add Isoxaben (gallery) to your mix. It will give you good broadleaf pre emergent control. And cut down the amount of weeds you're seeing now.
I would get on a good fungicide program. Scotts Disease Ex and BioAdvance hose end.

I'd like to see you fertilize for often. Lets say New Braunfels grow season is April-September. Targeting a low rate of N at .250lbs per month. Look for a product at the farm/feed stores called APF K8. It's an ammonium sulfate based nitrogen with added micros. Targeting 1/4lb of N you would apply 1.7lbs of it per 1000sq feet every month. Water it in. So what you're doing is apply less of the product but more often. Keeping a nice steady feeding going. Do that and I think you'll really like the results. If you want to up your target N to .5lbs per month that's fine. Play with the lower rate first and up it if need be.

Added a couple hibiscus a couple years ago. Did a lot of reading up on them and talked to the grower. Decided on Summer Spice and have been very pleased with them. They come back bigger every year. The grower assured me they were very cold hardy and to just cut them back to the ground every winter. At the time they were only sold through Calloway's and some Lowes. I believe they are sold through HD now. If you're looking for a hardy hibiscus this is a good one.

That’s a nice flower bed. It wouldn’t last 24 hours in my yard, the deer would eat it all.

We get a lot of rabbits eating our flowers. I’m surprised we even have any.
