Nice pic and even better find. I had not of them nor seen one that I know of, even though they are said to have ranged where I grew up. Surprised that there are 2 subspecies found in Texas with one being darker in color and the other lighter. Western and Desert are found in Texas. With the Desert being found down in South Texas with a wide range. It looks like their preferred habitat is what has them in a very large distribution range and lower numbers.

Yes. Actually more toxic than a diamondback but the amount it injects is much less than the diamondback so a bite is usually not as serious as a bite from a diamondback . Massasaugas are the only venomous snake we have in Ontario and they are rare.

OP - great find

Not actually a 'different' type of toxin, both are hemotoxins, but the potency can be different.

Very cool snake. Lucky find for the OP...as the Western Massasauga is not a very heat tolerant rattlesnake and spends a lot of time burrowed in the day, this time of year.

Glad to see the OP relocated the reptile instead of killing it.

up

When i first seen the pic the other day I asked if they'd had any hay delivered from up nth, that's a rare find this far in the southwest.

Mike I forgot to answer about the hay. About a week ago I finished cutting my coastal fields. Whether this had anything to do with the snake coming around the house who knows. It has been relatively cooler this year with lots of rain. Others north of me have seen this snake while others this is a 1st. Probably the “find” of a lifetime for me and so glad I didn’t destroy it.

I have only seen one in my lifetime as well. This one was from Knox County about 8 years ago. Didn’t know what it was at first other than some kind of rattlesnake. They only get about 2 feet long. Their venom is more potent than a diamondback, but they inject less, so not as bad. Still nothing to screw around with.

Do those ever get a pinkish tint? I saw a pink looking rattlesnake in Utah when I was up there mule deer hunting. Didn't know what it was, but now that I've seen that picture, I think it may have been one of those.

Range maps don't show it in Utah the Midget Faded Rattlesnake might be what you saw https://www.reptilefact.com/midget-faded-rattlesnake.html

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Out of its range.

A *Hopi* Rattlesnake is more likely what you saw. They can pinkish or red looking.
