Sorry, i know its not the best picture...

This 4’ snake was crossing the road in front of my truck. Was hard to identify for me sitting in my truck, taking a picture before he disappeared in the grass. We seem to have several of these cruising around of late. I just want to know the type and if it should be terminated as i do with copperheads and rattlesnakes!

One last question:
I keep hearing about a vaccine or shot of some kind i can get my dog to protect him from a venomous snake bite.
Is there such a thing i can ask my vet for?

Thanks as always!

I am no expert but i believe either a bull snake or rat snake from what i see online, should be harmless.

I'm no snake expert but it sure looks like a bull snake to me to

Definitely one of the good guys.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Bull snake. A rat snake is mostly black.

It is not that expensive and a great idea, especially if your pup will be trodding through snake country.
The one we got my son's dog was a 2-dose vaccine about 30 days apart I believe and ran about $100. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than a major vet bill with a bad bite.

Rat snakes have almost as many color variations as all the other snakes put together. I’ve seen them in orange & cream - most commonly referred to as Corn snakes. Seen them in Red/Black, brown/white, black with yellow spots, et cetera.

If your dog gets bit after getting the vaccine, you will still need to take your pup to the Vet.

Thanks a bunch for the comments on the snake vaccine for my dog...i will ask the vet next week!

I find it a little funny that some say king and some say rat...so i guess all that matters is that its non poisonous regardless which one it is. clap

Cheers!
Robert

The only thing worse than judging a pig’s weight on the THF, is snake ID lol. I could post a picture of a grass snake and someone would call it a water moccasin. roflmao

Just to add a little bit on to this since I haven't noticed it mentioned here - the vaccine is designed specifically for rattlesnake venom - with the exception of mojaves - which it offers zero protection. It offers limited protection from copperhead venom and NO protection from water moccasin venom.

Pretty sure the vaccine requires a yearly booster to remain fully effective as well.

Bull snake. One quick way to tell is the brighter coloration toward the tail.

Thank you!

Anyone know the name of the vaccine i should ask for? Or do i just ask for “snake bite vaccine” and the will know?

One final question...odds of dog dying with or without vaccine? (From worst type of snake bite) I know its a guess in most cases and depends on many factors. (Type of snake, young or old. Type of dog...young or old)

Also depends on where the dog gets bit. Had a vet tell me if it gets bit in the gut it won’t help. Head or leg it probably won’t die.
