Here is a thought on new AR counties. Say you are in one of the new ones. Example Mills county, last year was 5 deer county 2 bucks and three does. This year 5 deer 2 bucks (one with antler restrictions and the other spike) three does.

Actually the regs read; Bag limit: 5 (no more than 2 bucks, all seasons combined. So in Mills and all other cross timbers counties you are not limited to 3 does rather could actually use all 5 tags on antlerless.

I think i will like it , now in hill county i can take 2 bucks , but also no thanksgiving cutoff for antlerless deer, + two extra weeks of hunting for antlerless & spike. To me more hunting opportunity isn't a bad thing & passing on a less than 13" deer is no heartbreaker. This is coming from a meat hunter on public land, archery only. To me any deer i take is a trophy, a doe can be just as hard to hunt & kill as a buck from my experiences. But again, passing a smaller buck is no big deal, especially knowing on public land chances of survival & growth are pretty good.

Perfect example! He's border line, So he's a DON'T SHOOT deer. He's young and has potential. My neighbors (on all sides) will shoot that deer when his two front feet hit the ground as he's jumping the fence onto their property. Now it is ILLEGAL! I love it!!!

but 2.5 yr olds like this one are the ones that will get a hurtin' put on them. I would much rather have one like this live to reach its full potential than one that has heck and might make 13" by the time it's 4.5.

Therefore, state regs should be enacted to protect that deer in the best interest of the state.

If you want to grow your own deer, build a high fence. Then you can shoot a buck as soon as his horns poke through his skin and you'll be happy! For the "meat". LOL!

AR's protect the interests of the trophy hunter, not the deer.

If you want to manage your bucks for quality horns, why don't you build a high fence around your place? Speaking of which, if someone builds a high fence, how come they are not required to reimburse the state for those deer that are no longer allowed to roam free?

Out of curiosity, I e-mailed the TP&W asking how high fences effect once free range deer. Basically even though we can't hunt them anymore, they still belong to the residents of Texas. So take it how you wish but here's the reply I got back:

"They do not become technically his/hers since they still belong to all residents in the State.

Under Parks and Wildlife Code (the Code), §1.013, an owner or occupant of land cannot be prohibited or restricted from constructing or maintaining a fence of any height on the land owned or occupied, and an owner or occupant who constructs such a fence is not liable for the restriction of the movement of wild animals by the fence. Section 1.013 of the Code also states that the existence of a fence does not affect the status of wild animals as property of the people of this state. Thus, by statute, the Parks and Wildlife Commission is unable to promulgate regulations the effect of which would be to hold a landowner liable for the restriction of wildlife behind a high fence. This provision can only be altered or eliminated by the Texas Legislature."

high fences don't stop movement just deter them

Depends on how high the fences are, doesn't it?

How many 10' high fences have you seen?
I've seen deer clear 8' fences all the time. 10 ft the odds decrease but I bet there are still a few that will a make it.

Never put anything past an animal. I've seen 1100lb Brangus bull clear and 8 ft pipe fence like it wasn't even there.

I've seen some 10' fences but mostly are breeder operations and a wind screened.. Rita was the last chance they had at escaping. Have yet to see a cow or bull clear a 4.5' barbwire fence more than once..and they couldn't get over it...more like through it.

I don't travel South much, just East so I personally haven't seen very many types of any high fences.

99 percet of high fences range from 7.5-8.5 feet.

According to the ARs the fences must be at least 8' high no matter how old it is. Building one that is 7.5' could result in a fine.
