Not to hijack but I’m doing day leases on my 1 acre lot this season. Been pouring the bird seed & sunflower seeds and the birds are thick. Limits guaranteed...

The next question you should ask yourself is do you want enough land to sustain the deer that you harvest, or do you simply want to shoot deer sustained by neighboring land. The number of acres will vary, but a biologist once told me it takes at least 100 acres of good habitat in East Texas to sustain a harvest rate of one good buck per year.

I don't believe there's any doubt that people are and have been buying very small tracts to hunt deer. I myself know of a five-acre tract in East Texas that a couple of hunters have been leasing for some time now. Like most if not all these small tract hunters do in order to shoot deer, they just put up a feeder and wait until they show up.

4 acres sounds too small to me. You would be totally dependent on what your neighbors are doing.

Yeah, I saw that after I posted. LOL.

Maybe he should have stayed for that 10 years he was MIA. He may have learned something about deer hunting, land, and such. nidea

Pretty bad when half the folks here think it was an April Fool's joke...

IMO, absolutely not enough land to hunt

Even if you can do it safely on that small of a tract it is still not the right thing to do ethically.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Maybe, I guess I have a different take on it because it all depends on your motives. If your looking to high fence your place and have your neighbors pay for it. Depending on who is next door that might just get it done for you? I know someone who High fenced a 1500 acre track because he didn't like how they managed the place. So you never know?

They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason! nidea

Just for the fact of safety reasons, 4 acres is definitely too small.

If you think about it, you can kill a deer on 10 square feet, but is it feasible? Besides, who wants to hunt on 4 acres?

That all depends on where you draw the line between hunting and simply shooting deer.

Considering most people hunt over a feeder and I'd be willing to bet most people don't cover a 4 acre area during their sit I would say you can shoot deer weather on 4 acres or 4000 acres.

But that is irrelevant to the original question.

I think the question of whether or not it would be enjoyable, safe or ethical would all come into play long before the shooting vs. hunting aspect.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

The correct answer is no, it’s not enough land. But in my part of Wise county between Paradise and Cottondale, I would appreciate it if some of the smaller land owners safely took some deer. Either with careful use of terrain and elevated stands or archery or buckshot only methods, etc. We are overrun with does, spikes, etc. If they take a buck passing by that’s over the AR, so be it. I don’t own the deer on my property or off it.

As this area rapidly gets cut up for subdivisions and few acre lots, there are less hunters. My winter forage crop for the cows is a lost cause, My next door neighbor had the county ag extension agent out 3 years ago. My neighbor, an older gentleman and great guy, wanted help figuring out why he couldn’t get his winter crop going. The agent took a look at all the deer tracks and told him there’s nothing wrong with the field except deer eating it nightly. It is not unusual to see 30 deer or more grazing our back pasture early and late. If a few small property owners would take some deer it would be most helpful out here.

God is so good to me.

So true. What some see as a prized trophy, others view as nothing more than a nuisance.

This is an even dumber response.

From a stationary position, How many acres can one effectively hunt at on time regardless of fences,....... East texas not many unless you are sitting upon a large clear cut. 70 yards across is roughly an acre. A football field is 1.3 acres

This is a question strictly on safety and ethics of retrieval. Not “hunting vs shooting”... what ever that means.
