That's my biggest issue with my truck. Third DEF heater is out. I'm sure in close to needing a new filter I'm sure

I've went through one on my work duramax. 70k miles and that has been the only issue so can't complain to much but it's still annoying to have it in the first place

Both my last two trucks have been essentially trouble free except DEF pumps and heaters that but still $1200 a pop.

do you idle/drive at low speeds with no highway time alot?

No, now I’ll do 10 miles jeep trail on occasion hunting but not enough to clog the filter. I don’t pull over and idIe, in grained in me that means grass fire. Regardless it shouldn’t effect DEF heater or pump.

I've had two DEF trucks and both have had DEF pump and heater issues.

How many miles before the DEF equipment issues? My ‘14 F350 started it at 147k. It also included NOX sensor issues.

Yup. I played the diesel game for 12 years and then Uncle Sugar ruined them. During that time, gas engines made astronomical gains and unless you're towing extremely heavy everyday, the juice just ain't worth the squeeze anymore. I have a 2019 F250 6.2 and almost instant heat is awesome and I have no issue towing as fast as I care to go. Cheaper maintenance and cheaper fuel is icing on the cake. What more is there to say? I no longer subscribe to the "diesel trucks are cool" culture.

Haven't had one in either truck make it past 60k. Current DEF heater has been out since March of 2020.

Hopefully it will still pass inspection with a check engine light. Might be a good time for electrical tape

I have a 2015 all emissions intact diesel at the moment. Its got 100,000 miles on it and i have yet to fix anything. I plan to get 200k on it before i part with it.

That said im sick of modern vehicles. Everything is complicated as hell. I just want a vehicle again I can pop the hood on and fix myself. Its a $2000 job to replace the water pump on my truck, it has more bolts than you can shake a stick at requires pulling the one time used injector lines has a million o-rings etc. A lot of the other stuff is little different. It has been a legitimately great truck to this point, but its potential for costly repairs is high.

My next vehicle with be pre dpf/scr/egr or gas.

Great trucks for sure if you don't care about your fuel consumption. I've had several friends that have had them and I've never heard one of them yet say they can squeeze better than 15mpg out of them on the highway. I get 20+ with my little 2018 Silverado z71 and that is up to 80-85mph. Keep it at 75 and it'll get 22-24 all day long.

If you pull a lot even though it is lighter loads I'd stay with the diesel.
Just a ton more torque and a lot less down shifting with an automatic transmission.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

For me the ford ecoboost is a great option. They pack a ton of power, and unlike the N/A v-8's they make some good power below 4000 rpm. If you keep your foot out of the injectors they get respectable fuel mileage too. Ive never owned one, but know several people who have had great luck with them. For me they have been around plenty long enough to prove their staying power.

I traded my ‘14 Mega Diesel for a Rebel. I really miss my diesel, oddly enough, what I miss most is the feel of a heavy truck on the road and even the diesel clatter.

If you can afford to buy a diesel why are you concerned about what it cost to run it?

I went from a F250 diesel to a F150 ecoboost. The ecoboost is a great motor to be sure, but I have the exact feeling about it that you do. So far it has done well in mud, snow, and ice, but it feels like it’s setting on top of all that. In fact I’m sure it is, it will slide sideways in a heartbeat. After driving an F-250 for over 20 years I quickly noticed that it does not get the same respect from other drivers. I’ve had other F-150s during that same time but never drove them much, now I understand why.

Could not post it any better - my sentiments exactly. My eco-boost performed flawlessly on the road, no doubt about that. Pulling capacity was decent enough, but just not enough rear end or brakes.

its not always about affording it, its about wanting to afford it.

Its not breaking me either way it just seems frivolous to pay $150-$200 for an oil change when the same gas engine truck is $75.

I'll stick with the diesel for now though until this one no longer makes sense to own and I'll look at 3/4 ton gas options

Oil change on my 6.7 is less than $100. I do it myself, I could list several horror stories about somebody else changing my oil.

Too much of a pain for me to do it myself. Makes a mess in the driveway, plus having to dispose of 15 qt's of oil is a time suck.

I buy my oil at walmart, and i leave my used oil at walmart. They take it up to 5 gallons at a time.

I change mine as well. Amsoil synthetic (8.5 qts) and filter for $100 and 30 minutes of my time. Walmart and any other oil change place will take the used oil.

One of my uncles used to drive an 18 wheeler around to auto service places and o'rileys/autozones etc. and pick up their used oil. He said it was funny that all these places take oil for free and gripe about it, and actually sell it lol they should love the stuff.

On my way to Walmart to buy the oil, I drop off used oil at our local recycle place. It fits nicely in a 5 gallon bucket w/lid. The filters go in another 5 gallon bucket, take it when full to recycle place. No mess in driveway, a large piece of cardboard works for that. I’ve got plenty of time these days.

Too much of a pain? Dude, it takes 15 minutes or less to change. I’ve got an 18 month old kid, full time real estate and work nights and still manage to do all the maintenance on our vehicles.

It’s $75 for oil change and another $100 for fuel filters every 15,000 miles to DIY, or it’s $575 at the dealer and waste half a day or more.

I’m surprised to see so much ecoboost love here. I’ve owned three and had problems with each including intercooler condensation/water pump failure on my 2012, cam phaser failure on my 1st 2018 Raptor and cam phaser failure on my 2nd 2018 Raptor paired with a “smoking” issue after extended idling. 2nd Raptor even stranded me while towing due to an O2 sensor failure.

Each ecoboost was well maintained and all failures occurred prior to 60K miles. Have 3 buddies with Raptors/expeditions with came phaser failures, one has had them fail 2x under 60K.

Needless to say....bought a 2021 Tundra and couldn’t be happier. Drove to Nashville today average speed around 73 mph....got 17.4 mpg. Pretty dismal compared to the ecoboosts/5.0/6.7 Cummins I’ve owned, however, doesn’t bother me with such a reliable reputation.

It’s an absolute dinosaur in the option/tech dept.....but I know it’ll go bang every time.

Way too much of a pain. That 15 min ( which it does not take 15 min if you factor in going to get the oil, then going to drop it off after your done ) is 15 min I don’t have time for. As it sits now, Whatever time I do have at the house is catching up on emails or maintaining the pool. 3 kids, driving 1000 + miles a week at work 6-7 days a week, plus all my other commitments makes changing oil the last thing I want to do.

I drop it off at my mechanic and he calls me when it’s ready for pick up. Pretty easy and it allows me not to be worried about when I can change my oil and allows me to focus on other things.
