I have a 243 t3 tikka sitting in the safe and the action is so smooth I’ve been wanting to get it built. It’s gonna stay a .243 and I want a 20” barrel. I’m not a expert on the rates of twists and all that but I’m looking for the best twist to stabilize 90-100gr bullets. This gun is getting built with varmints in mind. So shots are under 400 yd. advice or point me to some good literature to educate myself would be helpful

What do you want your build to do that the stock gun won't?

What do you want your build to do that the stock gun won't? X3. My factory CTR is sub moa out to 800 yds with the factory barrel. Unless this Tikka 243 is shot out, might as well just roll with the factory barrel until it's shot out.

Well I want a shorter barrel for one and I’m needing it threaded for my cans. With them 2 wants I figured it be way better to get a aftermarket barrel to do both. It’s the t3 sporter 24” barrel

Why not just cut the barrel to the length you want and have it threaded?

$50 to have barrel cut and maybe a bit more threaded. Betting a good load work up will get it to well under MOA. Else, get a. Bartlein barrel to a good smith for cutting and chambering (closet to about $700) and good loads. Guessing current barrel is 1:9, 87 grain. Berger VLD’s will work great.

May entertain getting it cut just wanted to do it once and figured I’d be $300 or so to cut it and thread it just figured I’d get a better gun with getting a “better” barrel with the setup I wanted.

Cut and thread is $50-100 depending on who does it. Barrel blank is $350 Gunsmith is $350+ Yes, the barrel will be better. As mentioned, a hand load can make a good barrel (Tikka) better. And absolutely worth giving a Bartlein barrel a hand load. Seen lots of Tikka barrels shoot very tight with a hand load.

Tikkas are really great rifles. i tease on here because this forum is to tikka like the 6.5 Creedmoor is to the shooting world. There was a gentleman on here who can rebarrel a tikka in his sleep with awesome results

Cant you buy prefit shouldered tikka barrels now?
Put them on with a torque wrench and get on down the road?
I'd still get it cut and threaded.

The T3 Sporter is the heavy barrel with the adjustable laminate stock right? If that’s what you have I wouldn’t change the barrel, I would just have it cut and threaded. If you’re just wanting to build one I’d suggest starting with a different donor. Just my two cents, but that’s a nice rifle you have.

Build it how you want
You probably need a 1/8 twist. If you want a barrel 5/8 thread you probably need a Bartlein 3 at about 18” to have enough shoulder. If not 3b bartlein you can have any length.
I would get a Bartlein or Brux barrel. Ok not sure what you need in a Brux but probably around 4 contour.
I had a factory 243 tikka and someone made me loads and I thought it sucked. Made a 6 creed with a Bartlein light Palma and was happy.

Thanks to that fellow that is moving, my Tikka T3 in 260 has a 20” #4 contour Brux. Wonderful shooter, and the barrel seems to not foul easily.

It has just a lite sporter barrel but I don’t have to have a huge bull barrel or anything. If I’m not mistaken it has a 1 and 10 right now so I figured I’d have to change it to compensate for the short barrel. But that’s all I want it to do is be 18” threaded and be able to stabilize a 90gr bullet for shots to 400 yards. I’m gonna try to get hold of s&s and get some pricing info he’s the closest smith I know of to me. Yeah they’re are pre cut or pre fit barrels but I haven’t done the research on them I’d assume they are good seem to be a popular choice and for bout $650 I could have one shipped to me with the barrel nut but haven’t looked at reviews on that yet
