Vinyl is too much of a sub universe for me to get into, I would never be satisfied and I would have to build a record collection from scratch. I'm liking the idea of a nice integrated streamer instead. My plan is to get a do it all pre amp like the NAD M33 with a set of Klipsch Forte iii's and a two big subs for the living room. The NAD has HDMI ARC to downsample a TV to 2-channel audio, a high quality built in streamer for HD audio and built in driac room correction that can compensate for the imperfections in the Forte iii crossover phase alignments plus integrate the big subs. It can serve to other BueOS devices for whole home audio and it will play flac and MQA files directly off an attached USB hard drive or ssd. Anyway, that the plan.

Pro tip, don't buy a turntable from a "Hip-Hop" shop without changing the needle before use.

My record player and Vinyl collection is part of me and has been my whole life. I never stopped buying and listening to albums. Sorting through record Ben’s and boxes at antique stores and book stores is a treasure hunt of fun. I hate that is had become a thing again over the past 4-5 years. Prices have more than doubled and certain records have become hard to find.I’m biased but People need to stick to Digital for their listening pleasures.

I think I understand some of what Gravytrain said.

I have a large collection of 33 rpm records that just stay in cabinets. I wish I could find high quality gear to move the music to CD. Lots of low quality options are available. If one of you knows of the right gear, let me know.

My parents had one of those stereos in a wood cabinet from the 70's...solid wood, had the big speakers, turntable, 8-track, etc....about 6 feet long. Mom FINALLY decided to sell it this past fall...and someone actually bought the dang thing. I mean everything worked and it sounded great, but still. I still have all their old 78s.

I'm going for quality sound mostly. I need to get better educated with modern stuff.

My Father was in the entertainment business and loved music, mostly Big Band and Dixieland. Glen Miller, Harry James. Pete Fountain, Benny Goodman. He would buy the records in what was then called "Direct To Disc". REALLY sounded great.

He had Klipsch Corner Horns, a cheap Yamaha turntable and "I Think" a Marantz Amp. This was late 70's. Those speakers were HUGE but awesome.

I looked on Best Buy and Stereo East, dang stuff is EXPENSIVE !!

I might have to stick with my little BOSE link and Spotify

One of the things I did at the start of covid was to index my record collection. Then occasionally my wife or I would use a random number generator to pick a number and then go grab the corresponding record and spin it. We got to listen to stuff that hadn't been played in many years that way. I also remembered that we have some really bad records form the 80's and 90's roflmao

I have a sony turntable with a USB output and it came with a software package to help rip records to digital. It is time consuming. I also have another software that I use to adjust the level and add some equalization. By the time I have a digital file I like, I have to listen to the song like a half dozen times, so I haven't completed too many of them.

My wife got a turntable for Christmas and has pulled out all her old heavy metal stuff. I still have a Dual turntable but have not hooked it up in 10 years. Got some huge JBLs, JBL powered sub driven by a Denon receiver. Sounds awesome but don't listen to music very often.

I still use my mid 90's JVC system that includes dual cassette deck, 5 disk CD player, turntable and Infinity speakers. Just like new.

My daughter and SIL just bought my 13y/o grand daughter one. The first record they got her was Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon. Really??? Your going to go from zero to that right off the bat.

Grandad doesn't approve. rolleyes

Love that record but it's too much for a 13yo. They're moody enough!

I still have the turntable I bought around '84-'85:

And a few albums from back in the day, with some new stuff, as well:

After this chat got me interested, I decided to refurb the B&O turntable, but then just went ahead and ordered the new Audio Technika 120 with the USB port. I can ‘rip’ (new term to me) music straight to the computer from the turntable. It will be time consuming, but there’s some record songs I can’t get any other way.

Yep had to get a new receiver at the beginning of pandemic. Electronics are much cheaper nowadays or maybe I'm not as poor as I was when I was young. I have about 5 times the horsepower pushing these ancient Frazier loudspeakers, they sound like i have never heard them sound before. Put a big fat Jimi Hendrix on imported Polydor vinyl and it screams. The Yamaha site has all of the integrated receivers and pre-amps you need, this stuff is not hard to find and doesn't seem expensive relatively speaking.

I want to upgrade to Macintosh tuner and amp and find one of the older turntables used eventually.

Still have a JVC turntable and Scott receiver stashed in the closet. And about 4’ of vinyl also.
