My grandfather Jim Hodges and his brother owned 3 Hodges grocery stores.
Grandpa said when they first put a Piggly Wiggly in at Hwy 67 and Polk Street he said those big chain stores would be the demise of Mom & Pop grocery stores.

On some weekends and summers I would work there doing grunt stuff like racking Soda Pop bottles, sweeping floors, stocking shelves etc.

My older brother was a sub contractor doing wood trim work (Cornish) on those condos off I-30 and Dalrock Rd, I worked for him on them.
The news articles about all of the stuff on him made it sound like he was solely responsible for the Saving & Loans collapse.

My Mom worked at Riches in Atlanta, until I was born in 1950. After we moved North, I can now remember Bonwit Teller in NY, as well as Horn&Hardart food auto-marts.
My best friend in JH and HS was from Breckenridge Texas, and his folks would only buy stuff from Neiman-Marcus (because it was Texas-quality!!).

Driving up and down the East Coast Interstates, we always stopped at Howard Johnson's, or Stuckeys. Best Pecan Divinities ever.

Food Lion is another one that went bye bye after news broke of what they were doing with expired meat.

Food Lion is still operating over 1000 stores. It left this area because our local grocers were extremely competitive.

Actually Food Lions are alive and well, just not in TX. See plenty of them in VA, and eastern seaboard down to FL.
