I've gone full circle on bullets from being a cup and core bullet guy, to an a-frame/partition, to all copper, to bonded to now accuracy 1st, construction second. Any experience with the ELD-X? How does it compare to the VLD Berger? I’ve seen three pencil in two different calibers and have seen enough online to know it’s not an isolated incident. Saying that, there are a ton of guys who have never had it happen or seen it and have killed a ton of critters with them. It’s in the back of my mind every time I use them. I’ve killed two doe with them, both high neck shots and bullet did it’s thing and one was at 310 yards. But it’s in my mind and when I run out, I’m not sure I’ll buy more....and my AR10 7-08 shoots them impressively for an AR, matter of fact the pigs are going to get a heavy dose of them this year.

I've always been a neck shot guy. Only change as I've gotten older is to shoot them lower in the neck. I can honestly say that I have never had one run off, but the main reason for that is that I do not take neck shots beyond 100 yards. If the deer is not holding it's head up perfectly vertically, I will tilt my rifle so that the vertical crosshair is perfectly in line with and centered on the neck to minimize error.
My brother is an excellent shot but he has a unique approach. Rather than do a neck shot when the deer pops its head up vertically, he will shoot them in the neck when they have their head down feeding! His logic is that the deer is less likely to move when it's down feeding that when it has its head up. Yea, a little crazy, but it works for him, and as far as I know, he has yet to miss or have one run off with that shot.

you'll ruin less meat with a high shoulder placement than with a neck shot.

I can't really compare since I don't do high shoulder shots. For several years now I have been shooting Barnes TTSX and they don't ruin much meat at all. I don't have lead fragments scattered all over the meat. Plus, I'd rather lose some neck meat than any shoulder meat, or heaven forbid, any backstrap!

How does it compare to the VLD Berger? Only watched one deer go down with it so far. Just switched to it in the Creedmoor. I can’t say the end result was any different then 130 &140 vlds I shot before. All High shoulder shot. With that said My buddy killed a nice mule deer with it @320 yards and it’s didn’t go anywhere either, his was not high shoulder... his was Lower. Someone over the phone gave him the wrong dope over the phone. Daughter is hunting this weekend and has 4 tags left, might get western. She don’t play

She slept in over Christmas and I watched a nice 10pt for 30mins. I told her that morning when I got back to camp, one of the other kids will probably shoot him now since she missed her chance. Let’s just say she wanted me to shoot first forky buck I saw in NM, so I could hurry back and take her

Ive shot about 6 deer with a 175 eldx over the past 2 years at 2610 FPS muzzle. The exits are about a quarter size or a little more. No complaints.

Shot a buck high shoulder at 200 yards Saturday. I was in a 10 foot elevated blind. The bullet hit where expected and settled into the opposite shoulder. The deer didn't go anywhere. Meat loss was near ZERO. Even if a shoulder gets damaged, how much meat do you pull off a shoulder? Especially on a doe.
Btw, if a deer is close enough for a neck shot, aim for the ear hole and yes, I do bring in does shot in the ear. Not much meat loss there either.

Someone will come on and say they eat the brains(and maybe the ears.) And they will drive a Chevy to load it and there we'll go......but that will be ok. I love this forum.....learn, teach, entertain, make friends, make enemies, promote.
