Having spent 44 years in E TX I can say I agree with this statement. In the Freestone/Leon/Anderson Co. area, I didn't see hogs until the late 90's. With no wonder drug like penicillin, looks like we are infected with a sickness called feral hogs for life.

If hogs were to disappear tomorrow, they would only be missed by coyotes and vultures.

Hunters would miss hogs.
Hunters come from all over to hunt hogs in Texas and they don't give a rip about eradicating them. They enjoy the thrill of the hunt and are willing to pay for the experience.
Potential leasers always ask us if there are hogs for off-season hunting.

Hunters and the land owners who have to repair the damage hogs do are not in the same boat.

They cause erosion from their rooting. They damage fences with their wandering. It costs $264 per acre to repair damage they do in coastal hay fields.

Lessors do not come even close to removing the problems of hogs

Exactly, this land owner is:

Very much NOT in the same boat!

I hate them with a passion. Would jump for joy if there were NONE anywhere in the State.

Those that like to hunt them don't have to repair the damage they do. They are a Scourge and nothing more.

Same boat down here.

I have a brush control ag service business, and spend the seasons bouncing over hog damaged pastures in my tractors and equipment.
bang

I do have a ridged harrow that repairs hog damage in pastures and fields with though. Some clients like me to run that over their fields/pasture. Huge difference.

But the hogs tear it up again eventually.

Poor hogs, all they are doing is aerating the soil. Some people even pay to have it done.

This triggered a lost thought - does anyone remember the "jack rabbit drives" in the 40's, 50's or earlier?

Sadly not all landowners are on the same page.

I agree with that. I think the farthest north they will go is Nebraska
. Maybe south dakota

2019 map shows a county in North Dakota.

But not Wisconsin, Iowa, or Illinois.... scratch

Maybe they're coming from the north? confused2

Back a few ago when I had my place in Fayette County, all the ranches around us pastures were torn up and most had polled cattle but with my herd of Longhorns with switchblades on their heads, didn't have a problem. The cattle hated them. [Linked Image]
As long as calves were on the ground the cows were killers. Dogs and Coyotes weren't safe either. Cows would hear um coming and the stampede was on. The few places torn up was right by fence lines and even that wasn't much. Always kept a few steers out with them like this Guy and they were the badazz's on the hogs. .
