Judd....understood on that. Could’ve gone TTSX/Accubond/Partition for the Creedmoor. But that would’ve made too much sense and doesn’t land me a new, custom rifle.

I wanna go fast and make big holes.

Resale and convenience is probably best for the .30-06. 98% of the time in hunting, caliber makes no difference at all, so why not prioritize convenience and resale?

300 WSM is a pretty nice pairing with the Creedmoor. Nice step up in power as the animals get bigger and tougher.

I always wanted to load up for 110 Vmax for my 300 WSM and shoot coyotes with it. Figured i would never have to track one. Thank goodness I sold that kicking SOB though.

For the described perameters a good old boring 30-06 makes a whole hell of a lot of sense. Loaded with similar weight bullets as the 270 and it recoils similarly and is a little faster, and you have the ability of up to 220 grainers and possibly beyond for elk.

With a max range of 350 yards i think it should be a solid option and contender.

Long action - 280 AI

Short action - get the long action

I vote for something in 7mm like a .280 or .280AI. Very large bullet selection to do whatever is needed.

what's the difference between a 7MM and 7mm-08?

7mm is the diameter of the bullet. A 7mm08 is a 308 case necked to 7mm. There are several cartriges that use a 7mm diameter bullet. 7mm08, 280, 7mm rem mag, etc.

Next to calling a Hornady polymer tip bullet a Ballistic Tip (which by the way is a Nosler patented bullet specifically called "Ballistic Tip"), is calling a rifle cartridge by the mm.

"What cartridge do you shoot?"
"I shoot 6.5"
"Which 6.5?"
"You know, 6.5"

Guess what, I don't know. bangbangbangbang

Forget the WSM cartridges and build a .30-06.

I'd go with the 270 WSM.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Unfortunately you do know, them boys mean Needmoor. They don’t know any better. Anyone shooting anything else knows what they’re shooting.

I have rifles in both calibers. Hands down the 300 WSM if elk are involved.

You hear a lot about larger calibers for elk but make no mistake that smaller will also get the job done. When I was in Colorado over the summer I had 2 older ranchers say the 25-06 was their elk gun of choice with a nosler partition. 1 said the larger magnums were fluff for city boys who can't shoot or get within an acceptable range.

I can't tell you how many times people have bought 6.5-06, 6.5-284, or 6.5 PRC when they needed 6.5 Creedmoor ammo. Same thing on the 270. They have a 270 WSM rifle, but they buy 270 Winchester ammo. They buy it based on the first number alone, and don't pay attention to the rest. And they want me to pay for shipping there and back again. bang

True. I would rather have a shooter who shoots a 25-06 really well, than a hunter who shoots a 300 RUM poorly. You see it all the time.

Bobo on the forum said something about Randy Newberg on YouTube for elk hunting. So I looked him up on YouTube and watched what seemed like a days worth of elk hunting videos. He is far more experienced at elk hunting than I ever have a dream of being. In all of the shows, hours of them, that I watched, I believe he shot a 308 Winchester or 7mm08 Remington in all of them and made shots to 300-400 yards. I've still never shot an elk, but my conclusion is you don't need anywhere near a magnum, you don't even need a long action.

You don't, but if you're only going to go once or twice, why not give yourself every possible chance? What if your best chance is afternoon of the next-to-last day at 573 yards and there's no way to cut the distance? On a $7-10k hunt, do you want to come home empty-handed because you short-changed your rifle decision?

People that live in elk country will use a a lot of cartridges people that don't live in elk country think are borderline. If you paying thousands of dollars for a once in a lifetime hunt, people tend to go bigger.

It's like people coming from the North to hunt hogs in Texas. They hear about the bulletproof boar shields and bring down something big with premium bullets while Texans kill them with whatever they happen to be carrying.

I have a 300 wby. When i go on my elk hunt one of these days there is a 90% chance i will be taking a 270 or a 7mm08. I think it makes your mind feel better to take the shot at 573 yards with a 300, but if you can put that bullet in the same spot with either i dont think it makes a difference.

Yes it does.

I can hit a 4" plate at 800 yards with an 80 gr ELD-M out of a .223 A.I. But it doesn't have much energy. Just because a bullet can be placed exactly where it goes at 573 yards doesn't mean it has the energy to get the job done.

Look at the extreme end of the spectrum. If someone throws a bullet at you fron ten feet away and hits you in the chest, you'll pick it up and throw it back. If the same bulket was fired out of a rifle barrel, that's a whole different outcome.
