That's tough luck with the weather for you guys, but nice knowing you actually gave it a good hard try. it's unfortunate that they leave the 14" rule in place for the Youth hunt, because the point of it is for the kids to harvest a deer and have a good time. They have adult supervision so the staff does tell them what they want shot. My grandson's big 8 pt was 5 years old, and the 10 that my grand-daughter shot was 7 years!! They had night time pics off trail cam, but had never seen it in the daylight, and Dan sent me the cam pics. It would not be legal any more under current YOUTH regs. Here's a pic of them packed up to bring home.

This deer hanging in the Chap Office scores 198" and would not be legal there anymore. Sad

Wow, that’s a heck of a deer. There were several pics shared with the staff, but they were firm on the 14” rule. The one that was 13 5/8 was told they could keep the meat and the wma would keep the head, or they could just call the GW. That just didn’t sit well with me. 14” spread doesn’t seem to challenging, but Im certain there were only 3, maybe 4 bucks that would have met that in baldy and only one of those would have gone on the wall.. my point is, I agree for the youth hunts they should loosen up a bit, let the kids make some memories, and really encourage shooting mature deer instead of threatening to call the GW.
Not my pic, but here’s one they asked to shoot and were declined.

And here’s the one that was taken from a youth hunter.

Just me, but I think that’s bs taking a kids buck away from them over a few fractions of an inch.
I understand rules, but come on.

What are yall seeing as far as does and Javelinas? Do you think the odds of someone shooting a doe are pretty high or not at this point in the year?

I think just about every group saw javelina at some point. We saw a group of 7-8 two evenings in a row and I heard some say 15-18.
We saw plenty of doe as well. Sometimes 1, sometimes 5, but pretty typical to see some on each hunt. Very few doe were killed on this last hunt because we were all after a big buck, but the conditions really limited our sightings.

Hi All, to those that hunted the Chap so far this year I have a question. I got pulled for the multi species hunt this weekend that gives me access to 1x doe, 1x javi, hogs, quail and rabbits. I'm loaded down with corn to hopefully knock out a doe early, but am curious if there are enough rabbits and quail running around to make the effort worth a try. I was going to pack my shotgun either way, but did anyone see enough of them running around? I wouldnt mind some quail or rabbits for camp dinner one night.

Appreciate the intel!

I was there hunting big bucks in December. I didn't see any quail or rabbits up in the North Jay pasture. Definitely put out the corn 200 yards or beyond. Those deer are really spooked with all the previous hunts. Good Luck!

Stevarino, I haven't been online much so I'm late to the discussion. In 2016, there was two big buck hunts, and I was drawn for the second hunt. I was also the last one drawn for a permit so I had last choice of a compartment. I was given "Baldy", but the manager had told me that the early hunter had killed a 168" buck, but it was the only notable buck in the high fenced pasture when flown by helicopter. So, I told him it really didn't matter to me and that I was happy to be at the end of the road all by myself. He said that if I could, kill something old.

So I did, the manager aged it at 8½ and he was very happy with me and my kill.
