I have had several Model. 77 Rugers. I only kept one, in .308. Bought it about 35 yrs. ago if I recall right. Had it rebarreled with a Hart stainless barrel. Then about 15 yrs ago I bought a 50% completed thumbhole stock. Took about 3 weeks working in the evenings to get it finished. It shoots several different load into less than MOA. The only thing Ruger has ever done that disappointed me was their triggers and the Americans have solved that problem nicely plus we get the safety back where it was meant to be. You could work on the old triggers and make a decent trigger out of it but it was much easier to just replace the damn thing. I've got an old 77 Tang Safety that's got a nice factory trigger but it took some work from a damn good gun smith to do it. I've got a 77 in 243 that's got a factory trigger that I adjusted myself that's OK but that's about as good as your going to get without some serious trigger work.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I've always been a fan of Ruger firearms other than the P series semi autos. I bought an M77 Hawkeye .280 pretty recently and I can't say I'm completely disappointed, but one aspect definitely could have been better. When I got it (new), the rails for the bolt lugs were rougher than they should have been. The bolt just didn't work like I would have expected it to. With some work and lapping compound I got it smoothed out, but that's something I don't typically have to mess with. I'm still a big Ruger fan.

Been disappointed in Ruger since the American line came out. I think Ruger's forte has always been reading and reacting to the market. From the Single Six in the 50's, to the 77 (looked more like the pre64 M70 than the post 64 M70 dId), to the "entry level" rifles of today that shoot better than the old ones. I'm a M70 guy, but always been impressed with Rugers. And note: they are about the only major US firearms manufacturer left. I'd say doing a pretty good job in a shrinking market.

The choice of cartridge offering by manufacturers is cyclical. The .270 will be back. Again.
Truth is, the .270 Winchester remains a member (#6) of the nation's Top Ten list of most popular rifle cartridges based on the number of factory load options that were available in 2019. Because getting total sales numbers for each caliber is practically impossible, about all we have to go on is the total number of load options that manufacturers are making available to retailers. 1. .223 Remington - 421 loads 2. .308 Winchester - 365 loads 3. .30-06 Springfield - 269 loads 4. .300 Winchester Magnum - 190 loads 5. 7mm Remington Magnum - 150 loads 6. .270 Winchester - 143 loads 7. .300 ACC Blackout (BLK) - 137 loads 8. .243 Winchester - 133 loads 9. 6.5 Creedmoor - 122 loads 10. .300 Winchester Short Magnum - 84 loads Sourcethe most load offerings???...... WTH, that's about the dumbest metric for establishing "the most popular" cartridge.... Well, what if I shortened the list to the top 5.... you'll never see the .270 in the top five....

I love my M77 Mk.II in 6.5x55mm. Super accurate. I've heard many people complain that M77 actions were "rough", but mine has always been smooth as butter.
