Congratulations on your grizzly! Do you eat the meat? I've seen people eating black bear on various hunting shows and was wondering if grizzlies are also eaten, how it is prepared and what it tastes like?

Congratulations! After seeing the video of the grizzly attacking and killing a mature elk bull that Meateater posted this week, I have nothing but respect for you going out there after these beasts! Dimitri, eating grizzly isn't all that common, mostly because hunting grizzly is challenging and expensive and limited to only a few places. I'm sure if there were grizzlies in LA our cajun brothers would have some killer recipes!

Congratulations on your grizzly! Do you eat the meat? I've seen people eating black bear on various hunting shows and was wondering if grizzlies are also eaten, how it is prepared and what it tastes like? I lived in Alaska for several years and got to sample the meat a few times. It has more variability than any other game meat I have eaten. The best I have had was very good. A large roast from a rear quarter was slow cooked and served with a savory blueberry sauce. The well fed bear was taken in a blueberry patch far from the coast the meat had a pleasant sweetness to it. The worst I have had was a nuisance bear that had taken up nearly permanent residence at the village dump outside a good sized native village. It was in a very simple stew and was repulsive. I am sure cookery had a large impact on the finished animal as well, but it was remarkable how different they were. I have never had one that was eating salmon, but even the state of Alaska considers those bears inedible. Generally speaking, the locals eat the meat unless the bear has been eating fish. In that case, it is most often used for dog food, either for their own team, or donated to someone who keeps sled dogs.

He only got this one and was unable to connect on the second tag. With that though he is going back for moose. He says Alaska is an amazing place. My bud is headed to Africa in spring for a varied package of animals. Next month he is headed to Wisconsin for bear once again. Living the dream for sure
