It’s the mindset of having the right of way that wears thin on me.
Pedestrians don’t even look because some magical barrier is going to keep a huge vehicle from stopping. They just walk in out. Cyclist have a “right” to do what they do, and skrew everyone else’s lives they alter

RJH1 (A lot of bikes cost 1000s of dollars, so those guys taxes probably paid for part of the road.) Strictly a sales tax , Zero of that goes towards road improvements! For some reason most bicycle riders seem to think that they do not have to obey the laws or show the same consideration when driving on a public road, they have an arrogance about them like they are out to prove something I walk my mutt every morning between 6-6:30 and the most inconsiderate people are the ones on the bicycles.

So hypothetically, Because I’ve paid my taxes and if it were to become legal to roller skate on the roadway, I should do that because to heck with those bigger vehicles. I helped pay for that road? IDK what roller blade regulations are, but bike rules are the same as cars, so I am not sure what you are reaching for. I guess if you don't like sharing the road with bikes, write your congressman???

I was thinking the federal and state tax on fuel pays the majority of roads. Don’t know how much of sales tax goes toward road construction and maintenance.

The people I ride with are considerate, so maybe you got a bad group around you IDK. And with the taxes, i was talking about property and income taxes, if you are spending 1000s on a bike you are probably paying property and income taxes too, I damn sure do. Gas taxes are only a portion of what pays for and maintains the roads. Add in that bikes do no damage to roads, and the people riding bikes pay for plenty. Farmers don't pay fuel taxes and I guarantee their tractors do more damage than bicyclist. As stated, other than not stopping at some signs and lights, I tend to follow traffic laws. Hell, if no one is around i might not stop at a light/sign in a car either.

Gas tax pays for a portion, sales, income and property taxes pay for some too

https://texpirg.org/reports/txp/who-pays-road Many Americans believe that drivers pay the full cost of the roads they use through gas taxes and other user fees. That has never been true, and it is less true now than at any other point in modern times.
Today, general taxes paid by all taxpayers cover nearly as much of the cost of building and maintaining highways as the gas tax and other fees paid by drivers. The purchasing power of gasoline taxes has declined as a result of inflation, improved vehicle fuel economy, and the recent stagnation in driving. As a result, so-called “user fees” cover a shrinking share of transportation costs.
The time has come for policy-makers to recognize something that has been true for years, but is especially true today: we all pay for America’s roads.
Short-term funding patches – even modest increases in the gas tax – won’t change that. Nor will they be enough to enable America to achieve a 21st century transportation system. Doing so will require bold rethinking of how we raise transportation money and how we spend it in the years to come.

I don't even like driving over there In Abilene we have some real rear ends driving cars and pickups that are inconsiderate. Overall the bicyclists are pretty good here.

Exactly! It’s like they’re asking to get in people’s way or get in/cause an accident.

It is amazing how quickly they get the message when you don't slow and take advantage of every single inch of the road that you are entitled to.....

It is amazing how quickly they get the message when you don't slow and take advantage of every single inch of the road that you are entitled to..... I am just going to drop these Texas laws right here, what you think you are entitled to vs a bike, may not be what you are actually entitled too..... Bicyclists have the rights and duties of other vehicle operators: (551.101) Yes, this means you have to stop at stop signs and red lights, but cars are required to yield right-of-way to a bicycle when appropriate, just as to any other vehicle.Ride near the curb and go in the same direction as other traffic: (551.103) Near the curb is subjective (we recommend leaving a cushion of about three feet) but the law gives a cyclist the right to take the lane when necessary for safety.I am just wanting to point out that bikes and cars are actually equal on the road, regardless of what motorist OR bicyclist think

Equal in the eyes of the law, yes. I drive a Tundra but I bet the hell out of a Kenworth’s way every time.

If the cyclists are so equal, then get on the interstate hwy. Interstates are not 100% legal for bikes in TX, depends on where you are. Some interstates i would use if i HAD to, but because I am not stupid, I would rather not. Same as i don't use the interstate if I am hauling a questionable load, or other things that preclude me from driving fast

[quote=TXHOGSLAYER]Near the curb is subjective (we recommend leaving a cushion of about three feet) but the law gives a cyclist the right to take the lane when necessary for safety. Three feet? Too close!! With all the texters and other distractions it is a miracle there aren't more injuries or fatalities.
