with your primary and secondary rifles before deer season starts? How much during the season (practice wise)?
I will shoot 10-20 a week from now until season starts, then a few after returning home from each trip to verify stability after that much travel/vibration. Haven't made any changes in several years, but....
As for the carbine, I shoot it every week anyway at coyotes or something, and it stays on the four wheeler year round.
My son (16) will shoot at least a box a Sunday from now until then too.

I recently bought a new rifle in February and have sent 5 boxes/100 shots thru her and then did a complete barrell clean, etc. in May.
For me (and the gun's barrell), its too hot to shoot now and I won't shoot again until mid-October and then it will be as few shots as I need to feel comfortable with the gun. If she groups the first 3 right where I want, then I'm done. BUT, I doubt the first 3 will be where I want, so it will probably be at least 12 shots, maybe 18. I then buy another box of ammo (same brand/same everything) to use for hunting.
During the season, the only practice I get is when I shoot at deer. I've been lucky enough to never miss (only been hunting 4 years) and I've never dropped my gun, etc. I do take care not to let the scope get bumped, gun dropped, etc., etc.
I usually only shoot my other rifle (older one) 10 to 15 times per year. She is always shooting the same.

EACH YEAR I BUY 2 BOXES OF AMMO FOR EACH GUN I EVEN THINK I MIGHT SHOOT A DEER WITH. GO TO THE RANGE SHOOT THREE SHOTS IF I CAN COVER THEM WITH A SILVER DOLLAR ( OR CLOSE TO THAT) I'M DONE... IF I CAN'T, I SHOOT UNTIL I GET THAT GROUP THEN PACK THE GUN AWAY. IF I NEVER GET A GROUP THAT GOOD OUT OF A CERTAIN GUN I DON'T SHOOT IT UNTIL I HAVE THE TIME AND THE MONEY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE (USUALLY AFTER SEASON) AHH I REMEMBER THE DAY WHEN I USED A DIME THEN AS I STARTED GETTING OLD IT WAS A QUARTER... I GUESS WHEN IT GET TO WHERE I CANT COVER THEM WITH A LID TO A 5GAL BUCKET I'LL QUIT...OR SHOOT BUCK SHOT OH YEAH YOU ASKED HOW MANY ROUNDS WE SHOOT BEFORE SEASON,I'D SAY AN AVERAGE OF 12 PER GUN TIMES THREE GUNS THAT'S 36 ROUNDS
DISCLAIMER ATTENTION: Your decision should NEVER be based SOLELY upon my advice, recomendation, or opinion.

I usually only fire enough rounds to make sure the gun is hitting where I want it to or with in an inch any direction there of. Usually 2 or 3 rounds, maybe 5 at most per rifle. If I am going on a late season cow elk hunt or other big game out of state I will shoot a little more.

I will shoot about 50 to 100 rounds out of each of my 4 hunting rifles before hunting season starts. Durning the season I dont target shoot much unless I feel a need to. But I keep them on sight with hogs and yotes when I'm not deer hunting. I feel like the more you shoot the better shot you will be.

I try and shoot at least once per month but my schedule has not allowed for it this summer. It really all depends on whether I have a load that I like for each rifle. If not, I may spend 100 rounds (25 different loads X 4 shots each) to find a load that will shoot. If I'm not testing new loads, I'll usually shoot each rifle about 15 times each outing (5 - 3 shot groups each). So, between my son and I we will usually go through about 75 rounds through our deer rifles. During our shooting sessions we'll take .22 and .22 mags along to plink with while we wait on barrells to cool down.
At least in our case I can truly tell you this much. If we don't shoot for 3 or 4 months in a row, when we do go back to the range our first groups are not nearly as tight as the last ones. The more I shoot, the better I shoot! My son is 7 years old and was six last year before deer season and he shot 3 groups with my Savage M12FV 22-250 that were under 1" at 100 yards! Early in the year he was shooting 2' to 3" groups with the same rifle. During deer season he was 4 for 4 on deer and also shot a turkey at 200 yards! I'd say that practice does make perfect!
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I used to clean the barrells of my rifles about every other year or so. That is until last year! I had run about 200 rounds through my Savage 12FV .308 and decided one Sunday afternoon that I should clean it. I cleaned that one, a 22-250, and a .243. The very next weekend I went to the range and started to shoot. Needless to say I was a little more than hot when all three rifles shot groups over 1 1/4" at 100 yards when the previous weekend I had shot groups with all of them that had three holes touching and the .308 had been shooting three through the same hole! I continued to shoot groups and on the last 3 shot groups of the day, they finally started tightening up! I called a friend up at Canyon Lake who is the best gun smith I know and he asked why I had cleaned the barrells. I told him because each barrell had at least 100 rounds run through it. He laughed at me and I believe called me a dumb A$$ or something like that. He said the only reason that you clean a barrell is if you've gotten something in it or if it stops grouping! He said that once you have the barrell 'seasoned', keep the cleaners away from it! He alos said that today's powders burn cleaner and the bullets do not leave deposits like they used to. I will tell you this much; I WILL NOT EVER CLEAN MY RIFLE BARRELLS AGAIN UNLESS THEY STOP GROUPING!
Hope this info helps somebody out there.

barrrel cleaning....
I clean mine after every session, one shot or 20. Now, I don't use harsh solvents or wire brushes except about twice a year. Patches with oil are good. I have a BoreSnake at camp that is OK, but prefer rods and patches.
I can't imagine shooting a barrel continuously with the grit that comes out of one. Maybe, just maybe, if not many shots a year, but as much as we shoot I can see a lot of barrel damage, especially in smaller bores (223-25 cal)

I know I can take any rifle out of the safe right now and go hit money with it. However, I go thru the motions each season to make sure each is stll where I left it. Typically, I shoot about 3 shots out of each to make sure my group is still the same. If I make an adjustment, then I will shoot that gun again later to make sure I got it right. Before I head off to South Texas I go and shoot, have shot two shots, one shot, three shots, but no more. The just to make sure trips to the range do not last long. I go set up my target, grab my gun, shoot, wait a few minutes shoot again, wait and shoot again, typically on all guns except my 300, all can be covered with a quarter. On my 300 the third shot sits just outside of a quarter, but is still a good group, just the heat of the big bullet send it just a hair out of my perfect group. Then I do not clean the barrell until after the season and when I put it up in the safe. Of course, I shoot them a couple of times to blow all the cleaner out and it takes up to 3 to 4 shots sometimes for the group to come back to true.
What kills me is the guys at the range going thru boxes of shells, up to two boxes in an hour or more trying to get it on. If I go and I cannot get it on in less then an hour and a box of shells, typically I if I cannot get it on in 7, but normally can get it on in 3 to 4 shots...I leave and come back.

At that point all you can do it leave and come back. You think it is mental but who shoots a deer with a barrel at 500 degrees! Then it makes you mental because you can't hit anything.
I'll shoot one box before the season. First 3 rounds to see if it is on and then the rest just to shoot. And no, I don't clean my barrel either as I may shoot it 40 to 60 times in a year. I just run a dry patch through it.

About 3 per rifle, sig, is all I need.
I have never had to adjust the open sights on my 30.30 since I got it - never mounted a scope on it.
I hear tell that my wife is going to get me a new .270 to replace the rifle that was stolen. I might have to put half a dozen or more through it.

I do respect your opinion on the matter, but I'm telling you the truth about the Smith I'm friends with. I'd trust anything the guy tells me when it comes to any kind of firearm. He has built the last 4 or 5 rifles that were auctioned off for the Dallas Safari Club. His name was not mentioned associated with this gun but everyone knows who actually built it, and it's not the gun company from the Seguin area!! Because of this he is not doing anymore work for the 'Retailer' from Seguin though he is doing several custom rifles at the present time for some of the guys in the Safari Club including some take-down guns.
Just a note: Since the last time I cleaned my 22-250 I have run between 150 & 200 rounds through it and it will still drive a five shot group you can cover with a dime. This is with either 40 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips or the 55 gr Sierra GK bullet.
I'm just curious as to what barrell damage you are referring to? Yes, there will be some powder residue left in a barrell after a shot but it's blown out during the next shot! There shouldn't be any type of lead deposits to worry about. So, if this is not affecting the accuracy of the rifle, why mess with it? I can understand wanting to oil your gun down good if it is going in a case and being stored in a un-conditioned air space, but not if it is stored in a controlled environment.

You are right, all of my shots are out of a cold barrel...I have yet to shoot rifles over and over and have a deer run out. LOL... If I cannot get it on and I think the barrel is hot, I go back to the range. It is the guys at the range that I have seen going thru one to two boxes and still cannot get it on...that need to stop and come back later. I have seen them get mental....go inside and buy another box of bullets....

I will fire at least 3 rounds to confirm my zero, if it is still on then that may be all I fire. If I need to make an adjustment then I will fire three more to confirm it. I shouldn't have to shoot anymore than 9 rounds max to confirm my zero. If I shoot anymore than that it is just because I want to.

As many as I can, since I reload I'm able to shoot more. Once I confirm zero I go set on a tank dam or bluff and shoot turtles.

I too respect your opinion and that of your friend. My training and experience is that anything left in the barrel can be damaging, when that next round goes down the barrel. With the number of rounds we shoot, chances go up.
As for accuracy, the key to me is replication, and in competitive shooting or in a tactical environment, the only thing I can come close to reproducing every time is the clean cold barrel.
That is just how I was taught by my ancestors, trained in LE and Military, and the customs of the competitive rifle environment that I dealt with for several years.
I am sure that you are getting great results with yours, Savage 10Fp's are great platforms.
To each his own I guess.

I try to practice all summer with an adult size pellet rifle that has a full size scope. I put several hundred rounds through it from various positions. It's hard to shoot anything else when you live in town. However, I will take my deer rifles to the range in September and make sure that all are zeroed the way I want them so they will be ready for Wyomining on October 1st. Once they are zeroed, I don't clean the barrel until after the season is over unless I get something unexpected in it.

I use a weatherby 270 mostly.....I will go to the range, spend 10$ and fire 2 shots I could cover with a nickel, pack up and go home. This year I have a new 300WSM, Leupold 3.5 X 10 X 40 that on it that needs to be shot in, so if Im lucky....no more than 10 shots sighting and practice. At 45$ a box, cant afford too much plinking

I usually fire 2 shots on each weapon to make sure they are on and then turn it over to my 16 yr old Daughter and my 10 yr old Grandson. My daughter prefers her 243, and my grandson likes to shoot the bolt action 30-30. They usually shoot up 3 to 4 boxes between June and October.
