About this time every year I start filling the feeders and fixing up deer stands and one thing for sure is that I will take home my share of chiggers. Does anyone have ways to prevent chiggers and more importantly right now treatment for chiggers that have already taken up permanent residence in my body. Any help on prevention and treatment might save my bloody oozing body.

To Prevent Chiggers- Sulfur. It smells terrible, but it works. Guy I work with brought some to work w/ him. Fills a sock w/ it and dusts his self w/ it. Other than that, Off Backwoods is the only thing that's ever worked for me. That Cutter stuff works, but you gotta reapply it constantly.
Treatment for Chiggers-Fill a bathtub w/ warm water and drop in a cup of bleach, soak until the water is no longer warm. Read on some webpage that the clear nail polish trick is a myth. It said that chiggers don't actually burrow into your skin. They secrete a liquid that turns flesh soft, they then suck it up. By the time you notice a red bump, they've already moved onto another part of the body. Be sure to wash your sheets, pillowcases, etc., if you slept in your bed w/o soaking in the bleach water first.

I spray my socks boots and pant legs with Deep Woods Off and that seems to keep them off of me. If you think you might have them on you, or feel them crawling on you, when you come in from the pasture, remove your clothes outside. Pour some Clorox on a rag and wipe yourself down, then bathe or shower. There ain't been a chigger yet that can fade that Clorox A red shop rag soaked in diesel works good if you got the crabs too!

I remember some guys did that when we were at Ft. Hood, and they got really sick. But, I think they had the flea collars next to their skin just above their boots at the blouse line.
It wouldn't hurt you if they were on the outside around the ankle of your boot.
Seems like the chiggers and ticks were the worst I have ever seen at Ft. Hood. That was back in the mid 70's.

I use to work hay fields and cleaning fence lines while growing up. Chiggers would line up at the gate waiting for me!!! I got them so bad once, I thought I would claw myself to death. Went to locale drug store(this won't be possible today but you can get a prescription from doctor) and pharmacist gave me a dab of the prescription head lice medicine, said to dab finger in liquid and touch ever spot that was a chigger. By next day they were gone and that little bit of medicine that he gave me lasted all summer. I chose a different line of work after that. RID or other type of head lice medicine might work as well, just is not as strong as the prescription stuff.

Spray your legs, then put on your socks, then spray your socks, then put on your pants, then spray them, then put on your boots, then spray them... You'll use a ton of Off, but you wont get any chiggers...

BowHuntin, I do that every summer when we go work at the lease, but I still end up with at least 10 bites! They always manage to get me at the backs of my knees, and around my waist. I will say though, that I would much rather have only a few to deal with than hundreds. I fill a tub half way with warm - hot water, and add a half cup of Pinesol, and soak in that. It takes that itch away. For the more stubborn bites, I will just keep a cotton ball soaked with Pinesol in a ziploc, and dab on those spots throughout the day, as needed.
The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

My mom use to use Life Bouy body soap on us to bath with in the summer time to keep us from getting bit and it kills the itch if you have already been bitten. It still seems to work on the grandkids...
I'd rather be at the deer lease right now

Once you've got them, take a flea bath in regular old dog shampoo....works great

You can buy it at wal mart, walgreens. It's a real thick syrupy stuff it burns but once you put it on it over, there gone.

I have always had to sit in a hot bath when I have a problem with them. After a bath I will use a bit of vaselin on each spot. It deprives them of oxygen and kills them I think, I don't really know but a doctor told me that trick and its worked. As far as prevetion deep woods off seems to work best for me.

When I was a kid my Dad had a theory that since chiggers only bit when they got to a tight spot like you waistband, if he wore loose clothes maybe they wouldn't bite. He tested the theory when we went fishing and wore all loose clothes, so loose he had to hold up his pants with one hand. The next day he woke up with about a hundred chigger bites on top of his shoulders where the shirt hung on his shoulders. Those chiggers were so pist off by the time they climbed all the way up there that they bit the hell out of him, ha! We were all laughing like crazy.

A friend of mine who's hunted a ton in Africa and many other parts of the world swears by it, he showers with it before he hunt's. While all the flea's from the hog's were jumping on us he remained flea free and made a killing selling the rest of the shampoo to us the rest of the week.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.
