Think of what a 100-200 pound coon could
do to all your feeders. How would you feel
to wake up at 3 am, and a black bear has
tore all the window weatherstrips off your
truck and scratched the crap out of it trying
to get inside because it smells the wrapper
from that double cheeseburger you had on
the way down to your place?

Yes, there's one big ranch up there in particular where the Canadian River comes out of New Mexico into Texas and the bears follow that corridor.

I know they can be a nuisance, but I like the idea of having their population on the increase in Texas.

I’d love to see them more often

I'm suprised there have not been sightings around Lake Sam Rayburn, Jasper, Sabine County etc. May have been and I don't know about it.

With the increase in urban sprawl I'd be surprised to see them much further out.

And be careful what you wish for. I remember hearing people say they wish there were more pigs around to hunt.

The San Antonio newspaper had an article in todays edition about how Bears are increasing in Texas. East Texas and West Texas were the primary areas.

they Killed one in NW Menard county about 6-8 years ago. Back in 2006 i hunted a ranch in Real County that had one comming across and getting into the neighbors feeders. About the same time they also had a young boar get hit on Hwy 90 outside Brackettville.


I recently saw a video of one on a ranch in South Texas. Guy video'd it walking down a fenceline at about 30 yards.


They are becoming more and more common

I think it was 2 1/2 years ago, during deer season, that people where posting pictures on FB of a black bear at a deer feeder just outside of Bullard TX in Smith County. Around that same time, a realtor that I know saw one walk across the road in front of her at a rural property that she was showing outside of Kilgore.

The largest population of black bear in North America are in the Carmen Mountains in northern Mexico. Since bears are protected in Mexico, the population just keeps growing and this is the reason that there is a fair population in the Big Bend region and SW Texas. I was lion hunting down there about 5 years ago and shocked to see how many were there. The neighboring ranch had a photo of 14 bears under the deer feeder at the house at one time. I was also very impressed at the size of the bears and then I realized that is due to the fact that they don't have to hibernate and eat year round. They were eating juniper berries, mesquite beans, prickly pear apples and killed a horse the day before we arrived.
Those of you wanting to see more bears, just wait a few more years, we spot them from time to time here in Menard County.

Back in the 1960 to 1980 era I hunted in McMullen county. Always thought it was strange that the county laws said, " No open Bear season ".

Can't say 100%, but I saw what I described as looking like a bear, between Apple Springs and Nigton. It was a drizzly day and I came over the top of a hill. At the bottom, about 1/4 mile, I saw something cross the road. It was black and bigger than a typical hog, but too bulky to be a heifer/bull calf, and just had a different "move" to it. By the time I got to the location where it crossed, it was gone. Never even considered bears to be in the area, but after that day, I'd say it is likely.

The coolest photo that they had from the ranch where there were so many under the deer feeder at the house was a big boar that had to weigh over 400 pounds climbing out of the swimming pool.

Seen them in Big Bend NP. Have pictures but can't seem to figure out how to load them.

They are ferocious things...

One was spotted last month in Palo Duro Canyon. Photographer got a pic while doing an engagement photo shoot. Would be cool to see that area naturally repopulate with elk/bear. There have been elk spotted in the canyon a couple of times in the past 5 years.

Southwest Arkansas. 1 hour NW of New Boston. It is defiantly possible that they range into East Texas.
