Hey V, welcome to the forum. How are the bobwhite quail up in Kansas? Do you trial those dogs or just hunt?

Hey Muley,

The quail numbers are up around here. Seeing quite a few of them running around. More then I've seen a long time. I do trial em, just some walking stuff, a couple of HB trials...
I mean, they aren't cookie, or cracker but I like em... laugh

Here's a few from yesterday. Taken with my phone, but we had lots of nice points and backs. I was really proud.

Hey DoubleB did you make it up to the walking trial in Amarillo a couple weeks ago? I looked for you a time or two, but was pretty busy catching up with a couple friends most of the time.

No I didn't make it. After hunting for the previous 7 days we were pretty worn out. I called Burnie before the deadline and pulled my entry form. How did you do? I was just searching for another trial down this way.

I did okay.

My Ace dog did probably the worst job he's done in the last two years, but still took a 3rd in the Open Gun Dog. I was pretty disappointed with his performance.

He was back to his normal self the next day and handily won the Open Limited Gun Dog.

Congrats on the win! I have a couple questions for you. I'll take to email so we don't bore everyone here.

This was our fourth covey.

I got a whole bunch of pictures of our fifth covey because it was scattered. Here's one.

I didn't know that you could train redbone coon hounds to point.

Sure can! Redbones make great bird dogs. That way you can tree squirrels and point quail on the same hunt.

They even make good retrievers.

This was Cracker pointing a covey of wild bobwhite quail in Wharton county. I could walk to the bush today.

Some of my people are from Wharton. They tried a stake in Blanco County about 1870, after the war, but I guess there were too many Comanche for their liking and moved back. 'Moved to Palestine about 1890. Then to west of Kerrville, then to San Antonio in 1910.

She was out of the winningest female in NSTRA by Honky Tonk Attitude. I named her Cookie. She won the NSTRA regional trial at two years old. Some said that she was the best wild quail bird dog they had ever seen.
