Cold water on a hot skillet could cause thermal shock and crack it.
When I’m done cooking, while skillet is still hot I turn on my hot water and wait for it to get hot, then deglaze the skillet by adding a little hot water in the drippings in still hot skillet. It’ll make gravy from the drippings you can pour down the drain with the hot water running. Now you can rinse well under hot running water to cool the skillet some more while you grab the Tuffy pad to scour any remaining bits off the bottom. Rinse and repeat until clean then final rinse and shake or towel dry and put on hot burner to dry and turn burner off immediately.
No soap, no SOS pad.

I wish I would have known yall were doing this. I would have mailed a couple of pieces and paid yall to do them. Funny you should say that! How bout it Cast? I almost started this conversation but y’all couldn’t hear me that well. I mentioned that in conversation Saturday. ‘Oughta start a small bidness cleaning and seasoning cast iron’. Go ahead. Do it. Bullfrog is the shipping and receiving VP. So, have you gone into business yet?

No. Ran the numbers, did not work. I figured that, figured I would check. Cleaning the shed and garage found some cast iron pots and pans that the late wife had acquired. The 3 skillets from the garage look great and seasoned. The 2 dutch ovens, 1 lid, 1 small skillet and 3 sauce pans from the shed have a little rust and need redone. Time to get to work......

That already looks pretty good. Nice grab. It is worth much more if all is good with it.

Yea, but I'm a little wary of 2nd hand baked on coating - no telling what might have been in there. Hit the rust with steel wool and cleaned right up. Want to either blast or sand it down and re-season it. Have been watching for the right sized skillet that fits a certain spot in my chuck wagon. This is gonna be it

This is gonna be it This has worked for many years (before sand/bead blasting or steel wool) to clean them up, Build a fire and put it in the hot coals, will burn stuff right off and kill anything in the pores real well Then season it as usual with lard

Used your method and 4 coats bacon grease. Used a box fan to cool between coats to speed it up. I think it will work. Going to leave it out and use it for a while and see what happens. Out of the oven with the last coat On the stove heates with a little canola cooking spray. Couple eggs No mess at the end Thanks for the info in this thread.

If you have access to a good sand blasting cabinet... it’s by far the most effective way to clean cast iron for re-seasoning.
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

If you have access to a good glass blasting cabinet... it’s by far the most effective way to clean cast iron for re-seasoning. FIFY. Do not use sand, it is too aggressive. My blasting cabinet has never seen anything but glass. Oddly enough, I bought that rig to blast cast iron, but cast iron tractor parts on my old Ford tractor. The skillets came about as a happy accident. After blasting a few tons of tractor parts I looked at a dirty skillet and a light came on. Up to then, I was using extreme heat.
