Love my Redhawk .44 Mag w Leupold scope, purchased right here on THF and it was in your stated price range! Awesome for hogs, and you can use .44 Special rounds for target fun.

The Redhawk is the only double action revolver I would recommend, like everything else Ruger makes they're hell for stout. Don't get me wrong I love Smith and Wessons but the model 29 just can't take the beating a bunch of full house 44's are going to give it. If it's going to be shot allot I'd go with the the Blackhawk of the Redhawk, if it's just going to be shot a few times a year I'd go with the Smith 29. The Smith is more accurate, has a better trigger in both single and double action. Plus it just has that famous Smith and Wesson feel. If it's a dedicated hog gun I'd stick with a 6 inch barrel or longer, if a general purpose then no less than 4 inch. As far as sights go I stick with open sights, they're fast an accurate it's the rare exception that I felt a need for optics, never had much trouble getting close to a hog. My longest offhand shot on a hog was about 80-85 yards, most are 25 and under.

Have a Ghost Angel connector on order which is supposed to take out the wall and give a consistent pull. I also added a Houge rubber grip that helps. If I had to do again I would of saved some extra money and purchased a 1911 in 10 mm. The Glock has a viper red dot on it but I am more accurate shooting a 357 revolver in single action with iron sites.

(Somewhat) off topic on Glock triggers:

I’ve had several Glocks and used them all in competition at one point or another. The first one I had was a G35 that I used in USPSA. I was working a major match, and when the day was done we were all talking about guns and holsters and everything else the sport entails. We got on the subject of Glock triggers and I mentioned something about the Zev Fulcrum Ultimate (which was all the rage at the time), when a guy asks,

“Is it supposed to make it more like a 1911?”
“Yeah!” Was my enthusiastic reply.
“Then buy a 1911.”

Kinda pissed me off at the time, but he was right.

I've used my Colt 1911 .45ACP several times....works just fine....like with any rifle, shot placement and not exceeding the effective range of the round....

Large frame Ruger in 45 Colt. If you handload you’ll never want for a 44 Mag again.
