I have this very old shotgun that belonged to my grandfather and I can't find any information on it. The only marking I've found is "Caddo Chief" on the side of the receiver. My grandfather had this gun my entire life and I never asked him about the history of it. Does anyone know anything about this shotgun?

Look on the bottom of the barrel(s) under the forearm for any proof marks which will tell country of origin.

I have no ideas about the caddo chief markings but I'm guessing Harrington & Richardson made the gun.

I'm wanting to say Savage or Stevens but something still doesn't look right.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

There were several different makers of single shot shotguns back in the days gone by. Not sure who made that one but at different times H&R, Ivery Johnson, Winchester and several others if memory serves. Some of them were as mentioned abogve sold by stores as theit brand.

When a trade name can't be cross referenced it usually ends up being a Crescent. Any hardware store could order a handful of shotguns with any name on them they wanted. So there are 100s of different trade names for that manufacturer alone. Every Crescent SXS shotgun I have handled I think had that Prince of Wales grip. And that raised pointy profile to the back of the receiver is on some of them as well. I would do a search of pictures of Crescent Shotguns and compare the receiver profiles to yours to see if you can find a match. Whatever the true maker is really don't matter. It's only value is as a family gun. I would make up a good story to go with it for when you pass it on to one of your grand kids, like say your grandfather won it from a drunk Caddo Indian Chief during a late night poker game at a Louisiana Indian Casino and the notches in the stock are how many guys your grandfather had to fight to get out of the parking lot with the old Chief's truck gun.

Here you go. From the first page on Google images. An old gunauction.com sale of an Empire State Arms single shot shotgun. Same profile. Same trigger guard. Pins in same place. Same markings on lever. Link may not work, so I put the pictures at the bottom of my post.

Empire State Arms does cross reference to Crescent.

I found another using google images that though not as clear of a picture of the other one, has the same raised profile at the back of receiver, same trigger guard, same stock. Howard Arms Co also cross references to Crescent on the link above.

There is a lot of variety with Crescent made shotguns, but the design looks close enough for me to believe you have a tradename shotgun made by Crescent Firearms. Common sense of the name would indicate whoever ordered them was probably a business in Louisiana or any other area with a Caddo Indian history.

Another addition on that story to make up to go with the shotgun could be that when your grandkid say's "no way" to the original poker game story is to then admit it was a lie. That the truth is some Caddo Indian Chief had ordered a number of custom marked shotguns from Crescent to give to all his friends and it was really just one of the old Chief's friends your grandfather was playing poker with. And who knows, it could be true.

Thanks for the info Sniper John! That definitely looks like it. I'm kicking myself for not getting the history of some of his guns when he was still here. The only ones I have any real information on are a Belgian Constable Model revolver he brought back from Europe at the end of WWII and an old Iver Johnson revolver that belonged to his father when he was a kid, and those two pieces of information are all I have on those.
My favorite gun of his is an old Remington 510 .22. That was the first "real" gun I ever shot when I was a kid. I took it out a few months ago and did some plinking with it just to keep the old girl running.
As far as the lie to my grandkids, I'm going to pick one and take it to my grave. smile
