The only point I was making earlier is that you can get that 3500 FPS with the 110 gr Accubond. What I left out is that, per Nosler, you can get that MV in the 270 with a 24” barrel, but it takes a 26” barrel with the Weatherby.

I wasn’t saying to forego the 257 Wby in favor of the 270. Just making the point that you can get that velocity in that weight bullet with a rifle you may already have.

At 100 yards, the 257 has an energy bonus of 50 ftlbs over the 270 and the same weight Accubond. At 400, that increases to a bit more than 100 ftlbs. Does that matter much? Your call on that. And for comparison, both calibers with that bullet weight have more energy at 400 yards than the 6.5 CM with a 140 gr Accubond leaving at 2800 FPS.

pretty good comparison and probably not a ton of actual difference when your talking whitetail.

But, you don't get the cool double radius shoulder with the Winchester and a little voice inside your head screaming "yeeehhhhawwww" every time you pull the trigger either.

Dang it, I did not account for the Yeeeeehaaaaaw factor. I think that factor was what pushed me to buy a 220 Swift years ago. First crow I shot with that rifle instantly turned into a black feather donut, complete with donut hole just above the limb he was sitting on.

I hope the OP gets his 257 Wby. Why not get it when the mood is upon you.

Years ago I shot a turtle on a log, roughly 100 yards. There was another title on top of it. The turtle on top was knocked about 3 feet high when the turtle on bottom took a 52 grain billet to the shell

When I was a young man I lusted after a LH Mark V Deluxe in .257 wby they had on the rack at sportsmans warehouse. I remember it was around $1500 at the time. I would go in there constantly and handle it ( think Wayne's World and the Fender Stratocaster ).

I could never bring myself to buy the rifle, at the time I couldn't justify spending that kind of money on a rifle. Lo and behold, they sold it and weatherby stopped making production left handed rifles in the deluxe.

Years later, I had a really good year, was going on a mule deer hunt decided I needed a new rifle. I was actually looking at Blaser R8's and ended up at a small gunshop in boerne who had a nice left handed R8 ( also in .257 wby ). There was a Left handed Mark V ultralight on the rack in .240 wby and I was messing with that, owner said he would cut me a deal on a rifle and he could order whatever I wanted. I ended up getting a .257 wby in a Accumark that arrived 3 or 4 days later, just in time for my hunt.

I don't know what it is, and it sounds stupid, but after the buyers remorse wore off ( still have a hard time spending money on guns ) I was really glad I bought it. For me, it was almost like I reached a milestone or something.

Anyway, that's my .257 weatherby story. I hope the OP gets his as well.

PSSH,

Talk you into it you mean smile

Just the name enough reason !! smile

However, do not use the lower grain weight, hard barnes bullets on Hogs. Goes right through the medium sized ones. Plum through and through. LOL. Make the hog mad, and it runs off. Dangdest thing.

Heck, I just checked my stable. I have three .257 Wby. rifles. To the OP only, if you want one and can get to or near Waco it's yours. and if you reload I'll throw in a set of dies ( have two of those for some reason) and a little brass made from 7mm Magnum. If you decide it's not for you I'll buy the whole lot back for what you paid for it. 0. This is not a sale so I don't think it violates forum policy?

OP,

if you are interested in proprietary Weatherby cartridges, have you considered Weatherby’s new 6.5 RPM?

It has lots of good going on. It shoots slightly heavier bullets, 127 - 140, which can be helpful on longer shots. They also offer it in their six lug Mark V receiver, which shaves about 3/4 of a pound, and they even offer a sub-6# rifle if that is of interest.

https://weatherby.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/6.5WBYRPM_Data.pdf

If you are a MPBR shooter, the 6.5-300 is a fire breathing beast pushing the 127 Barnes LRX at 3500+.
